I believe this is a 4T80E, which is the same trans used in the Northstar-powered Cadillacs. Be advised that the whole subframe likely needs to come out to swap the trans.

I would pass on that car. Its cost around 2000-3000 to have the transaxle rebuilt, and requires a lot of labor like Joe said. The Aurora with the northstar engine is more of a pain to work on than a Cutlass LSS with a 3800. All the Aurora I have saw for sale have had bad transaxle. Add the cost of rebuilding the trans plus the car, not worth it.

Does it have a 3.5 or 4.0 engine?

I wouldn't buy it either. By 2001 the Aurora was ugly. If it was a 95-97 it might be worth buying. Those were cool.

Should be a 60 model and not the 80 model. The 60 model is more common and also not one of the better transmissions from GM. Whats it doing?

I have one of each in my Auroras. Both are known for bad speed sensors (that are internal) that fail. I've had to change them on both

Was that unique to the 3.5 motor, or all second gen Auroras? I know the first gen with 4.0 used the 4T80E.

Unique to the 3.5

No offense taken on the ugly comment. I have both (although my 96 is for sale). I really like both cars a lot.

Oh! McDiss with cheese!

That is cool to each his own. I've heard that Auroras either have bad transmissions or blown head gaskets. I might buy one someday over the rainbow. It is good to do some checking so you know what to look for.
