manual to auto conversion

I'm interested in converting my 69 442 from 4 speed to an automatic with overdrive transmission.
I would like to hear from some of the transmission experts here on what I will need to do this: ie what transmission would work best and will I need to replace my console or maybe only the 4 speed insert.
Where is the best place to buy an overdrive transmission?
Will I need a new drive shaft?
I will keep all 4 speed parts so if the next owner would like to re-install the 4 speed.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Jerry

The OD automatic question comes up a LOT. 200-4R, properly built to handle your engine's output, is the easiest installation and best-matched gear ratios.

CK Performance built my 200-4R, it rocks. I'm not sure how your 4-sp tail-shaft length is compared to the Jetaway I was replacing, but I didn't have to buy a new driveshaft.

I'm sure one of the shifter manufacturers has something that'll fit in your 4-spd console, although it might look more original if you change to an AT console, use that shifter and replace the indicator (if you don't want to count the notches every time you drive). I kept my column shifter (!!), and find that counting notches isn't that big of a deal.......as long as I don't want to try to control the shifts.

The short-tail Jetaway, TH350, and all manual transmissions are exactly the same length as the 200-4R. The crossmember will need to be moved to the TH400 location, however, along with changing the front and intermediate e-brake cables to match. Cutting up a factory 4spd console to fit an aftermarket shifter for a 200-4R is a complete waste of $700 (the going rate for those consoles). You can get a 67-69 AT console for around $100 (I just bought one). Shiftworks sells a kit to convert the factory floor shifter to operate a four speed AT.

If you ever did have the urge to sell all the 4 speed parts to convert an Auto to a 4 speed I would be interested.

Joe, once again you have a wealth of knowledge that you share freely and I really appreciate it, so Thank You.
If I go thru with this project, I do intend to "keep it professional" so I will find the correct console.
I also intend to properly store and keep all removed items so the next lucky owner will be able to re-install all back to 4 speed as this 442 is a beautiful all original (except HEI distributor) 58,000 mile car.
My age and health is the only reason that I want to go automatic.
Are they any specific 200-4R trannys that I should look for or stay away from?
I will also be looking for the correct Bell housing.
Thanks to all for your help
Jerry

The 200-4Rs from the Turbo Buicks, 442s, and Monte SSs are preferred, but if you are having one built with the necessary upgrades, it really doesn't matter where you start. All 200-4Rs have the correct bellhousing. The rare, very early cases were BOP-only, but you are more likely to end up with one of the vast majority that were unisex. Either one works for your application. Also, be sure the TV cable is properly set up and adjusted after installation to avoid trans damage from improper line pressure.

The proper TV cable bracket is found on late 70's Olds 260/TH200 or 80's Olds 307/2004R combos. A deep pan is a necessary upgrade along with a bottom feed filter. Does the 69 400/442 engine put out 440 ft/lbs of torque? Consider the $400 billet foward drum and welded in shaft as a piece of mind. Where do you **** when pushing it hard?

Jerry, you should be prepared to take a 10-15% haircut on the value of your car once the conversion is complete. A factory 4-speed is considerably more valuable than an automatic.

Consider a 5 speed like a TKO or the newer smaller version to keep it a stick and still get your OD. I put a TKO in my 69 GTO and I loved it.

Jackie I'm aware of the value drop if I was selling my 442 with an automatic, but for now at least, it is NOT for sale. I am only trying to get the car more friendly for me and my wife to drive. We are both over 65 and not in the best of health.
Should someone else want to re-install the 4 speed, all removed parts will be available for whoever to do so and I expect that will be after my lifetime.
Thanks for your input
Jerry

I'm sorry to hear about your health woes, but glad you're still able to get out there and put some miles on. Anything that facillitates that has to be worth a few bucks. Best of luck!

Thanks for all replies
If you have a choice between a 200-4R and a nicely built 700-4R which would you use behind a Big Block Olds that is pretty much stock. Does the 700-4R require an adapter plate to mount to the engine and how will a 2800 stall converter work with my engine
I have a nice 700-4R that came out of my 67 Camaro with the 2800 converter that has worked well behind my strong built 350.
What years auto console will fit in my 69 442 with out requiring modification.
I'm sure I'll have more questions if I proceed with this project.
My wife suggested that I sell my 442 and buy another with automatic, and I thought "oh ****", she is on to me.
