Thermostat Question

Gday everyone,
I own a 56 olds with the 324ci rocket. Can anyone tell me which way the thermostat is meant to be installed. I have had the big spring facing down toward the engine block but the water has not been flowing. I have not been able to find the correct direction laid down in the manual. If i have had it in backwards i will kick myself!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The thermostat is like a rocket - pointy end up (well, pointing towards the radiator, anyway).

It was a new thermostat but i will chuck it in a pan on the stove and see if its working. It is a 91 deg C thermostat which is a hot one. I might get a 80 deg C one if its working. Thanks for the advice so far guys...i appreciate it!

Be careful when you boil water to check the thermostat, it gets hot!
