firing order quetion

Hey guys, almsot got the cutlass done and on the road. Will post pics soon. But here is my question; I am wondering what the firing order is on the 350? And does it change from year to year. Also, how do I get the number 1 wire in the correct position on the distributor. I have HEI distributor which makes me think it is not a 69 350. The block number is 395558.

Thanks for any help an info.

Andrew

Ok so searching I founf that they all fire 18436572. So I guess question is now, how do I find where number 1 wire goes on the distributor?

Thanks again

Easy. Turn the engine over by hand until the No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke. You can either pull the valve cover to check that both valves are closed or remove the spark plug and check for compression with your finger. The rotor will be pointing to the No. 1 position on the cap.

If you didn't pull the distributor it should be no problem, if so just drop it in with the rotor pointing to number position on the cap or close to it after finding TDC. I use a compression tester to find TDC so I can click it over and watch, or get a helper, but your finger will work fine doing it that way by yourself if you have really long arms. After I find top dead center on the number one piston I rotate the engine slightly by hand so the balancer timing mark is on the specified timing setting on the tab. I then hook up a timing light to number one wire, turn on the ignition and rotate the distributor until the light flashes, turn off the ignition then tighten down the distributor. I never tried this technique with HEI though.

Works with points, Pertronix, and Crane switches. Not with HEI.

i recently put my 330 enigne back in car and out some on timing which i plan on fixing this weekend or one night this week. i gotta get tdc. and line the mark up with 7.5 and then reset the dist. just little confused on the pic thing. it make sense to point rotor button at number 1 for fire that normal right?

Rule of thumb is #1 on the cap points to the #1 plug. So #1 would be where #5 is in that picture.

Thumbs up Opposite

On HEI #1 is diagonally opposite to points distributor, #1 on points is front left and #1 on HEI is rear right...

The location of the no 1 wire on ANY distributor is a function of how it was installed. So long as the rotor points to that wire when the no. 1 cylinder is at compression, you're good.
