350 intake manifold and choke

Hello from Holland,

Because I broke of a bolt of my exhaust manifold I'd to lift the head. when I removed the intake manifold I noticed some holes in it, also a cracked EGR valve and a rotten choke tube. Now I want to replace this manifold by a 37111 edelbrock. According to many of you, the combination with the stock q-jet would work fine.
Do I've to replace the EGR and choke tube's and why? I read something about blocking these things, but doesn't understand why?
Perhaps a silly question but... right beside the water neck are two sensors placed. What are these so I can order them. And at last, a 180 degree thermostat; is that allright in my "set-up"?

I hope you can give me some advice.

Grtz,
Wally

There is Another Option

You can block them off with SS plates (available) between the heads and the intake manifold in order to lower the temperature under the carburetor. However, if you are driving in a cold environment (the Netherlands), that may not be the best methodology. You need to consider the intended use of the engine.

I blocked mine off to reduce the heat. I then made plates for the outer EGR ports and routed my exhaust gasses from the exhaust pipe just in front of the catalytic converter to the right side of the manifold through my fabricated plate. I installed a new EGR valve and associated components and connections. When activated, the EGR allows the exhaust gasses to enter the vacuum side of the intake manifold to meet the EPA regulations.

I have an automotive (primarily Porsche and VW) and an engineering background.

I also, installed an Edelbrock 3711 Performer EGR intake manifold (idle to 5500 rpm) and a single Edelbrock 1411 Performer 750 cfm with Electric Choke.

Hi James,

Thanxz for your explanation.
I'm now thinking of mounting an electric choke on my Roch 4bb instead of repairing the rotten choke tube(s) and plate.
Due the weather here in Holland a funktional choke is rather crucial.
For now, I think to put back an EGR in the stock set up.
In Holland every classic car has to do an two years inspection, so first I want to figure out the exact emission standards.

What about the elec. choke:
How did you power it. There are several methodes. ( ignition coil, fuse box IGN, oil sensor etc...)

Grtz,
Wally

Hi Indy,

I'm an electrical nobody....so,
Joe's article is very enlightend but in my Cutlass there's an oil pressure sender(PS12) only for a lamp ( 1 wire) and not like the picture (3 wires). Will this funtion also?
I mean, when I connect the elec choke with this only wire.

Grtz,
Wally

Electric Choke Insurance for Cold Weather

Indy_68_S posted a great idea for a method that only applies power to the choke when there is sufficient oil pressure. See his article at

I believe Joe is suggesting in his article that you replace your sending unit with a 3 terminal unit (part number included).

Sorry Indy, Great idea.
It was the link that caused me to rush the credit.
Speaking of credit, check out Chief Warrant Officer ah64pilot's work at

Shizzy also has some great ideas and suggestions.
