If the cam and crank are not timed properly it would probably affect all cylinders the same not two cylinders but anything is possible. I'm wondering about the remote chance the cam was ground to an incorrect valve opening sequence that does not match the firing order. Also wondering if the valve springs might be weak on those cylinders, if original they are approaching sixty years old and may have been the ones fully compressed for over 4 1/2 years.

hi, wondered that myself,thinking i may have got timingchain out 1 tooth, but as suger bear said in his post would probably effect all cylinders not just #5 & #8,but don"t mind being corrected if anyones had a similar problem thanks brad

hi ,just an update on our car .we've got it running and it sounds sweat. thanks for all your help ,a couple of things we found may have all contributed to our problems.had a heavywieght running in oil in motor which we think gave us the lifter problem ( slow leak down ,i think thats the term)also we had a vacume hose inside the vacume boster come of which didn't help the apprentice machanic (me) at all,anyway as i said runs sweat thanks brad
