FYI, an original 1972 Olds Qjet would be number 7042250

That is a strange part number.

I recall that up to an including 1974, the part numbers started with a 7 and the third digit represented the year (e.g. a 704xxxx carb would be for a 1974 car).

In 1975 they added a 1 to the beginning of the part number and the fourth digit represented the year (e.g. a 1705xxxx carb would be for a 1975 car).

Sorry, but that is not correct. The third digit was the decade. 2 = 1960s, 4 = 1970s. The FOURTH digit was the specific year.

A 1972 Oldsmobile carb would have a number starting 7042xxx. 1968 would be 7028xxx. Etc.

I would LOVE to hear the explanation for why we [they] couldn't just use "68" for 1968, "70" for 1970... etc.

"68? Hell, no, let's use TWENTY eight!"

Especially since Rochester already allocated TWO characters to specifying the year of the carb.

This does beg the question, what happened to decade "3"?

You are correct Joe, I got my digits mixed up. I didn't add that the number system changed every 10 years so that they could use the same year digits over again (1966 to 1975 had the same system, then they added the 1 in front and started over).

I saw a "date code" the other day of like L15 for December 2015. Not "1215"... WTH is this fascination manufacturers have with "encoding" the date. We already have numbers for dates, just _use them_. Wanna date a 1968 carb with two digits? Use "68". See how easy that is?? This ain't top secret spy stuff here. Put the damn date right on there in regular numbers. Crikey...

As for what happened to the "3" decade... it went with the "C" big block...

I think it was an attempt to bypass the 70's thus preventing the rise of Disco.
