What Color should I paint my 67 442?

I'm trying to decide what color to repaint my 67 442. It needs to be repainted and I think I'm going to go away from the Original Gold.

I think I want to do a two-tone pain job.

Colors I'm willing to use are Graphite Gray, Black, White, Silver, and Red (but only with the black top).

I've included quick photoshops of Graphite with a White bottom, Graphite with a silver(ish) bottom, Black with a white bottom, and Black with a red bottom.

If you want to see another color combo, just ask. I'll try and photoshop it quick.

Let me know your thoughts.

None of the above. Get the two tone idea out of your head. If you have to have 2-tone paint the top and use vinyl top trim to separate it.

I don't need two-tone paint. I just wanted to break the car up a bit from one solid color. The body has a nice line to do the two-tone with. I seen a picture of a 67 with the two-tone split in the same spot and it didn't look to bad.

I think 2 tone might be a bit "busy" but of the ones you showed, I like the red bottom.

The big problem I see with you 2-tone layout is that it fights the Cutlass Supreme side moldings. Even though the body line is a natural break point for a 2-tone, that molding splitting it just messes it up, IMO.
One other comment: your 2-tone style was generally more of a mid-70's and later design. That upper/lower style wasn't common on 60's cars, which is probably another reason most here don't care for it. Most 60's cars were either a solid color, or a solid color body with contrasting top, or a solid color with stripes of some type.

I find it telling that I couldn't find a "two-tone" '67 442 on Google Images apart from this black-on-most-of-the-rocker-area drag car...

...which, come to think of it, doesn't look that bad at all.

Apart from later Hurst versions with contrasting rockers, people just don't seem to be clamoring for two-tones (apart from contrasting vinyl tops).

So are you going to keep this car for a LONG time or perhaps flip it soon? My experience says you have to keep to the factory color to bring decent dollars come sale-time, unless you shoot for the "Resale Red" market.

With your palette in mind, however, you might think about something like this [I KNOW IT'S A PLYMOUTH, BTW. DON'T HATE ME FOR THAT AS THIS IS THE ONLY IMAGE OF ITS KIND I COULD FIND]:

Given your colors this is the scheme I'd go for. Simple, understated and yet sharp.

Generally, I like keeping with original paint schemes if not colors. But, making it YOUR car with YOUR colors may be what makes YOU happy and that's the most important consideration IMO.

Your point about the decade differences makes a lot of sense to me. Maybe I need to look into a Photoshop with the top being a different color instead. Which would lean to a more stock two tone.

Thanks for the input everyone. This is my first classic, and the first car i need to repaint. The more input the easier it is for me make up my mind.

On that one i would like a wide black stripe between the tutones , with the fender over the wheel line top o bumper follow the line to top o bumper

As much as i dislike two tones (and i do) i would say -IF- you are going to do it, do the current standard fad/foose-esq one that goes an inch or so below the top of the feders & quarters, w/ some sort of accenting pinstriping between the colors.... If you gotta have two-tone, that would at least look good.

These lower ones just don't look right & they do not compliment the bodylines on the car at all... JMHO.

I actually like the 67's to be one color. Makes the car look way more bigger than it really is.

I also like the idea of painting the top the contrasting color. My 70 has a painted black roof and Reef Turquoise body. I had a 62 F85 parts car that had a painted white roof and blue body.

That red/silver car is fairly close to me.

Paint it burgundy mist. If you gotta go 2-tone, paint the roof black and get some vinyl top moldings.

I am pretty much a factory stock guy.... Is your car stock or not? I dont think a jazzy Foose paint job goes well on a stock car. But as always its your call and your car. Keep in mind personal taste sometimes makes a hard sell to another when the time comes. I am not fond of red but my 67 project is a R R car so I am a slave to do it red..

Over the weekend I've decided to paint the car one solid color. I'm going to go with a Graphite color.

Now I'm deciding if I need one solid strip down the hood and if it should be White or Silver.

I have a white 66, and a red one, both solid color. I used to have a Sierra Mist (gold) with black top and didn't care for the top being different. I suggest you consider red, plain black, and a couple 67 colors that look real distinctive--saffron (pale yellow), and turquoise. I liked the original GM colors for 67, and 66 tropicc turquoise was a dark metallic turquoise (aqua) that was real nice.

I think the 66-7 cars look their best in colors and schemes from the era, not trying to look gangsta ghetto. JMO.

If you do two tone, consider the body lines as a break point. To me, the top being a different color made it look like it was a Ford Skyliner with a removable hard top. I would make the break near the top of the sides, and follow the scallop behind the door, etc. Or, look a the Hurst Hairy Olds and do something similar.

I've decided to go with a solid color. My decision is now between Black, ZR1 Cyber Gray Metallic, Porsche Meteor Gray Metallic, or Nissan 40th Anniversary 370z Gray.

If you go graphite,you might as well just primer it gray and cruise it like a Rat-Muscle car.It will be plain and the chrome will just dissapear.Have you ever seen any chrome on those cars you used for color samples? GO BLACK,Solid Black.You will draw crowds wherever you go.If you must go graphite ,Find the darkest one you can that flashes "black look" in the sun.
