painted bumpers to match body

Has anyone here ever painted the chrome bumpers to match the color of the body on a-body cutlasses?

My bumpers are in semi bad shape and there aren't any good chroming companies in stl, mo.

Thanks Rod

Have you looked for a good chroming company? I think you are mistaken that there aren't any good chroming shops in St. Louis. I know there are plenty in Kansas City where I used to live. St. Louis is much larger than KC. If you can't find a good one in the phone book then contact the local Oldsmobile club (a very active chapter) and ask someone there.

Ultimately, I don't care for bumpers that are painted body color, but that is just me. If you were to paint them at least paint them an aluminum or steel color.

painted bumpers

Just look through some Car Craft magazines from the early 80s. monochromatic I believe is what that look was called, I still see a few cars around here in Phoenix just listen for the Van Halen tunes and then look for the big hair guy at the shows.

You mean other than on a Rallye 350? (yes, I know they were urethane coated)

I happen to like the look. The problem is that most paint does not stick to chrome. At a minimum, you need to sandblast the bumpers to rough the chrome then use a good etching primer for adhesion. The "right" way to do it is to have the chrome (which is really chrome over nickel over copper) electrochemically removed so you have bare steel. Of course, this is halfway to a rechrome already.

Here is the website for the local OCA Chapter. Contact them, I am sure there is a good chrome shop near St. Louis that could easily rechrome your bumpers. If all of the shops in St. Louis did get shut down due to EPA regs then it wouldn't be that far of a drive to go to Kanasas City, or Cape Girardeau to find a good chrome shop. You could drive out there on a Friday after noon and drop off
your bumpers at a shop.

Just trying to help. IMHO, the monochrome looks is ugly.
