Question about installing a Gas Tank on an F-85
I am working on my 62 F-85 installing a gas tank, and have run into a problem. The tank has two lines. One is the feeder for the gas (3/8 hose line), and the other is 1/4 inch hose line off of the gas sending unit. What is the 1/4 one for? I bought the tank from a gentlemen who had taken it out of a two door convertible (same year). My car is a 4 door sedan. Any answers to what the 1/4 hose is for, and where I am supposed to connect it to. I have to make this work somehow, because it was very difficult to find a tank for this year.

Hmmm... well, since the guy said he got it off of a 62 convertible I guess it couldn't be a line for a charcoal canister. I have no idea what it would be for.

I would use this hose as a vent & place it higher than rear end to avoid water. That year may not have had a vented cap,There should be some type of check valve for the end of it

Isnt the 1/4 tube just a vent? There should be some type of bendable clip mounted on the underside of the body to hold it in place

Just had a tank replaced on my 62 F-85 convertible.
The 1/4" metal line coming out of the sending unit is the line that carries gas up front to the fuel pump then the carb. (It follows a groove in the top of the tank) The larger hose that comes out of the tank near the filler pipe is the line that allows air out of the tank when you are pumping gas. It connects to the 3/8 pipe fitting that is about 8" down from the top of the filler pipe. BTW According to my shop manual 2Dr/4Dr bodies all use same tank... the only different tank is for the station wagon - I guess because the tank sets farther back from where the filler door is on the body thus a longer filler pipe (?) And I would guess the tank itself is same and the repair shop coud swap the filler pipe from a bad tank to a good one if necessary... Last edited by Barneyo : 01-16-2008 at 05:51 AM.
