A/C system repair/modification

I am finally repairing the A/C on my 69 Cutlass. Replacing all parts with new...condenser, evaporator, compressor, exp valve, etc. I'm having the hoses fabricated from the originals at a local A/C shop.

The QUESTION is this:

One of the hoses that connects to the compressor (can't remember if it's suction or discharge) has a large can inline; it's insulated and about the size of a coke can. I believe it's a muffler. What would be the effects, if any, of eliminating this can when I have the hose made?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi. A muffler is used in the refrigerant system to reduce compressor noises and high pressure line vibrations. The effects would be like taking off the mufflers to the engine. It'll still work, but will be a lot louder. If it is in the system design, I would try to leave it there. Jim.
