Wow!

That a beauteous car, very nice, congratulations on a fine resto.
It looks like a 2 door hardtop, that body style is cool.

A few quick questions;

1. What are the purpose of the super-cool ultimately awesome spear tips on the headlights? (As if it matters.)
2. Do they make them for smaller quad headlights like mine?
3. And if the answer to question 2 is yes, where do I get them?

Around here with all the things on the road they would be lousy overpopulated Deer-Spears.

Could they be Reindeer-Spears in northern Norway?...poor Blitzen.

Hit a bimbo pop star crossing the road and they could be Brittany-Spears.

What a great looking four door. Nice job the red really pops. The windshield visor adds a nice touch

 

The Olds 98 is my favorite car and I like the 57's especially. Saw one at a local car show this summer fully restored like yours, but a pearl pink/champagne color and whitewalls and I had to take a million pictures.
I think the 57's are a really nice combo of 1950's styling and 1960's size and performance. It's got the J-2 rocket "six pack", right?
I'd also like to ask about the transmission...Is this the original (pre-slim-jim) dual coupling steel four speed hydramatic?
My math teacher had a hot-rodded olds 88 from 1949 with the old steel 4sp. Hydramatic, said the tranny was bombproof. Apparently it shrugged off constant neutral drops without breaking a sweat.
Anyway, awesome ride! Ever consider putting a continental kit on it? They look nice on 57's in my opinion, but of course its your baby...I wouldn't let people boss me around as to what to put on MY 98!

I have started collecting parts for a conni kit

The visor is bought from Big jims and is fiberglass, but the fasteners on the middle of the roof seems a Little weak, so I am looking for original ones, does anybody know if they look the same for other years and models?

If anyone should have an extra set, I am very interested in buying them.

But I still have things to do, I have too look into the autronic eye and see if I can get it functional ,the same with the power antenna and the vacuum system for the heater system.

 

Oh yeah!

BTW, if you do some searching on our site I'm sure you can find a dealer that rebuilds autronic eyes. I know I've seen a website before listing contact info for a gent that rebuilds the autronic eye.

I will see if I can find anything wrong with it first, it blow the fuse right away, but there could also be a wiring issue , anyway ,we bought a house in Texas last year, and I will be there 6 weeks in February-March , so I should have a chance to find any needed parts then.

I'm looking forward to seeing it...the 57 olds is one of those cars that would look perfect if it were just a little longer, and the conni kit just does it out nicely.

 

If the vacuum hoses are original on the car, then buy twenty feet or so of new hose and replace them one by one...you just have to get use to standing on your head...use a small flash light under the dash, less heat and no damage with melted stuff...the schematic for the hoses is in the chassis manual... the blower motor works by vacuum operating the electric switch just above the right cylinder head...on the vacuum motor that opens the fresh air door the visor brackets are different than a '56 there's a pair for '57 and only one large for the '56...'58 might be the same as '57...

 

I've heard the autronic eyes don't work properly because they are blinded by the modern halogen headlamps. Perhaps this has something to do with why it is malfunctioning.

Fine ride! I like your visor and fender skirts and the color of your car.

Lots of vacuum lines under the dash, as you probably know. Actually, lots of vacuum lines tucked away in many places. Yellowstatue has some good advise about replacing the lines with new ones - I had some problems with vacuum leaks until replacing some of mine - in the engine compartment especially. Good luck.

 

I'm with eveyone else - AMAZING looking car. Great to see the interest in the classics, which leads me to this innocuous question: Are you planning on putting on the big fat white wall tires? I'm so used to seeing them like:

I still haven't figured out how to get my hands into the dash area behind the heater and fresh air controls to replace the lines. I have disconnected and plugged the main vacuum fed line until I can figure this out.

 

Wow that is a very niice looking 98.. I have a 57 olds 98 that I am restoring now and it is a job but really enjoy it so far.. So did you do all the work yourself ?

 

Citcapp: With the seat all the way back, I just lie on the floor,on my back with my head on the tunnel near the heater and a small light and the schematic handy on the seat and very carefully reach in and do what needs to be done I might use a small telescopic mirror, but that screws up my head if it looks messy and untidy under there then I disconnect stuff and re-route wires and or hoses and that makes it easier to reach in and repair as nessesary...

 

Oh man!!! That car is too cool!!! I love the back window, w/ the small pieces of glass to the outside. It's just over-all a great car.
Cranfills Gap? North of Gatesville? I'm thinking that maybe I went to an "out of town" run there, a foot race, 5K or 10K, could that be? It's just a familiar name. Maybe there's another reason it's familiar to me. Anyway... The car is totally GREAT!!!

 

Hi: NICE JOB on resto......I have it's" Sister in Aqua Blue". . try 40' of vacuum hose, Then you can plug and drag old lines through firewall.. made life a bit easier.

I just had another look at the pics of the right front fender...looks like you have the scripts reversed...

 

pontchief, I had asked in my last reply if Cranfills Gap is north of Gatesville, in that area, as I think that I ran a 5K or 10 K foot race there afew years back. The run was sponsored by either your chamber of commerce or a local running club. We may be very close by each other. And again, that car is beautiful, the color along w/ the skirts and it being a 4 door, the total package is great.
IMO, the black walls are perfect, keeps it nice and simple.

Yes , Gatesville is not that far from me, maybe with we could meet sometime, I just have a prepaid phone over there, and its shut down, every time I return too Tx, so I have too drive in to Waco at at&t , to get it locked up again and I sometimes , have too get a new number..

I have done the mechanical work on the car and some other stuff, I have not done the paint job or the upholstery..

I have it for sale her in Norway now, since I need more money for my house in Tx and also want to put up a shop there

And you know , how it is when yoy not are rich, you have to sell a dream too make another dream come true...

Out of all the different outstanding areas of that Olds, the "dashboard" has to be the greatest looking piece of that car. The chrome makes a great background f/ all the controls it has. Overall beautiful.

i don't think I've seen that many fender skirts in my entire life either... and thats including some of the biggest car dealers in the area back in the day... haha... I better not show these pics to this old guy down the block from me... He's early 80s and he's a lover of skirts!! haha... when I was in my teens he was always telling me that he wouldn't buy a car without fender skirts...

 

Hemmings has a one page article on the '57 98 dash, along with a couple of photos. (Feb. Issue). I think that they are great, I am always poking my head inside of these cars whenever I seen them at shows.
