Pictures of my 66 98 LS

Here are the pictures of my new 98.

It was originally an aqua blue but was painted light lavender many years ago. The repaint was very well done including all jambs and inside the hood and trunk.

These pictures don't show how bad the rust is. The rear bumper is nearly gone on one side.

Looks pretty decent. I'm sure with some grinding and welding you can fix the rust on the car easily. Look around and someone might have a lead on a rear bumper for you.

I am kind of torn about what to do with this car.

I live about 10 miles from work in rural Iowa so I can drive an old car as a work car. I bought the 66 LS to replace my previous work car, a 65 Pontiac Star Chief (you can see it in the background of one of the pictures). I also have a modern Chrysler T&C but it's so boring to drive.

The Pontiac still runs great but the interior is completely falling apart and the body rust is getting very bad (I live on gravel so it fills with dust).

The 98 is less rusty than the Pontiac but the body is not worth the cost to fix. I would like to find a good back bumper but the more I think about it I would rather not use a good back bumper on a car that I am going to drive year round and eventually rust out.

I need to fix the speedo cable and figure out the Comfortron to use it as a driver so those are my primary repair goals.

Please understand daily driving is not the same as "driving it into the ground". I think that if I were not driving this car it would have ended up as a parts car, derby car or just junked.

Why not use the Chrysler as a daily driver and drive the Olds as a weekend warrior?

That's a fair question.

The Chrysler has never seen show or slat and is 99% rust free. The Interior is stunning and it's optioned as well as the LS. It has 53,000 miles and drives like new. It's the nicest most original 60's car I have ever owned

The original owner (a very old lady) bought it new in central Texas where it was mainly driven for trips and stored it in a garage. She passed in 73 and her daughter in Iowa got it. The daughter thought it was to big and only moved it around from time to time when it wasn't stored in her heated garage. She decided it sell it in 2001 because she wanted the space in her garage for hobbies.

The Olds is so rusty underneath that I think it only has a few years before it's no longer road worthy wheater I drive it or store it. I am actually going to reinforce a couple places on the frame (trans crossmember mounts and dog leg right behind the front wheels) before I start driving it.

Sorry. I got confused

I mentioned in another post that I had a 66 Chrysler and I thought you were talking about that.

I do daily drive the van quite a bit but I am trying to keep some miles off of it so i can preserve it as a family trip car.

We actually used to use our old cars as trip cars also but as our family grew (kids and pets) we pretty much need to use the van to carry every one and all thier stuff.

I bought a 65 Delta 88 to replace my 65 Starchief from a few years back.

The 65 Starchief you have, is it the one with the white top and the rear seat speaker?

The same one. It's not to the junking stage yet but it's getting close.
