Hello everybody. My name is Shaun, I am 23 years old. I live in Sierra Vista, AZ. I have been in the Army for about 5.5 years. I have a newborn boy and am married. I recently picked up a 1956 Oldsmobile 88. The engine was rebuilt 18 years ago, and is running good. The interior is a little messed up, but that shouldn't be too hard. I am not too savvy with cars, but i plan to take automotives classes at the community college when i return from deployment. If anybody has any tips or questions? I am all ears. If anybody wants I put pictures up. Thanks for having me!

Well when i get back I know i have to put in new floor pans on the drivers side. It seems like there is a lot of minor stuff, but it will add up I am sure.

Are they completely shot or just a few pin holes?

There are some big holes in there, I get a nice breeze up the pant leg though. The guy I bought it off of gave me an oldsmobile parts magazine from usapartssupply.com there are floor pans in there for 90 bucks. I am going to go around today looking at salvage lots to see what i can find. My friend is a certified welder so hopefully he can help.

Oh I was wondering about something. There are two holes on the top of each fender just behind the wheels. They look like screw holes. would the be for mirrors or some sort of trim? I have tried to look at other pictures and i never seen anything there

Sounds like a good plan. The reason I ask is sometimes you can patch them in other ways, but if they're shot, you headed in the right direction.

Good to have you with us! My son is going into the Canadian Armed Forces,and will likely end up in Afghanistan. I just finished putting a whole front to back driver's side pan in my 69 442.The guy did such a great job, I felt guilty covering it up!This site has all the answers you'll need.Good luck as you serve your country and as you restore your Olds!

Welcome to the site. X2 on your service to our country its heart felt. The holes on your fenders are for the mirrors as you guessed. Fusick has replacement mirrors, you can download their catalog from their web site Fusick.com. You 56 is very similar to my 57 if I can help in any with your question please let me know. There are others on the site with 56's who can help you as well. Its a good thing that you have a friend who is a welder that will be a big help in fixing those floor pans. I was pretty sure they were mirrors. I just wish i didn't have to leave. I appreciate the help. I put up some pictures of what I am working with right now, like I said before in my intro I don't know much about cars, but I plan on learning. This is my first project.
