Nobody ever sent me a memo about a needle scaler, I am going to get one for sure.

Looks like a very cool tool! Thanks for the posts, the pictures are great! That car is going to be awesome when its done! Dash pics are very helpful I need to start dismantling mine.

Thanks for posting!

Thanks for all the replys and comments, this is what our club is all about; sharing your experiences and knowledge, it' changes all the time. I could not have gone this far without through research, asking alot of; sometimes to others stupid questions and getting hands on help from local club members, DC2X4DRVR, and GEARHEADS. I strive to do things only once. I made few mistakes already on the frame preparation I'm not happy with, if anybody wants such detail, just ask. And Hotchkis dropped the ball last week and did not get some parts to me to start on the front end last weekend. So maybe this weekend? Besides that, it was a great "Father's day"

Getting the front suspension/brakes together

With 2 fans going in the 105 degree plus heat I managed to get a lot of the front built this week while on vacation. Seen in the pictures is Hotchkis controls arms and a steering linkage kit, Lee steering box and QA1 shocks. The brakes is the B-spindle upgrade described in threads on this site using a pair of B spindles I got off an 92 Buick Estate Wagon, New 92 Caprice Police calipers, 90 IROC-Z 1LE performance package 12 inch rotors and all the mixing and matching parts. Some of the parts for this upgrade are getting a little hard too find. I located the two new B-spindle dust shields at Chevy stores, one in Dallas and the other in California.

Stickman, you can tell by the ( lack of interest) responses on this thread is why I signed up on pro-touring.com. The project is definitely going in that direction. I like the slammed, stealth look.

getting towards the finish

A lot of little detail things are going on since the last post. Now I'm going to learn how to bend, double flair the brake lines, decide where to install the distribution block and the proportioning valve. Have to make or purchase a bracket for the rear brake distribution block and soft line that will work with the Moser, install the rear brakes and figured out what I need to do with the parking brake cable since a 200R4 is going in and the cross member needs to moved 6.5 inches back. I don't think the stock 64-67 cable will work.I decided to buy the Moser rear finned drum brakes over the $$$$$ rear disc set up for know anyway. I also just mocked up and installed the 425 block and a 200R4, repositioned the cross member and then will build a new drive shaft to handle the 425 torque.

Great build!

Your car reminds me so much of the two 64's I have owned. The first was a 64 post beater that had a v6. Never had the money to build it as my kids were young at the time. My second was a 64 Cutlass hardtop which I tore down to a stripped body and frame. I built a Toro 455/400 for it and did the whole car, not as thorougly as yours is. I look forward to seeing more of your car on here.Strange there hasnt been more interest, I think it is fantastic!

Thanks Chuckford, I believe part of the reason there is not a lot of interest on this build is because I'm building a car, not restoring one like most are on the Club site. I don't think it has much to do with the car being a base 64 F-85 post. Most of the parts and new additions require modification, some fabrication, not just bolt on and go. Yes when this car is done it will be a one of. Few more years. I will post the updates when I get the brakes done and all that. The restration center is getting closer to start putting the color on the body-Target Red.

I just took these pictures of this new drum set up from Moser. If I get to crazy and stoked up about autocross racing I can change them over to disc. The fronts are the B-spindle upgrade with IROC Z 1LE package 12 inch rotors with Caprice police car calipers and all the mixing and matching to get this set up correct on an A Body. Along with an adjustable proportioning valve that should stop the buggy without spending $$$$$$$$$ for Wilwood or Baer. I did decide to spend the $$ on Russell braided soft lines.

How wide are the brakes from Moser?

I used the rear brakes from the vista cruiser for my '68 Cutlass. Same as Buick sport wgn and I think Pontiac also.
On my blue '64, I did 4 wheel disc. I used '68/72 stock front disc and Cad Seville for the rear rear disc.

I read this thread all the time and have notes for myself for the future.

There is an easier way to upgrade your brakes. Others will say it's crazy. But keep the drums in the rear, save the cash. Contact Porterfield brakes. Tell them you want their racing brakes. Yes they make shoes for drums and at times even have them in stock. If they don't you can send in old shoes and they reline them. Get front pads and rear shoes. The stopping is unbelieveable. They will dirty your wheels bad or so I am told. I did a couple autoX runs and 2 track day sessions and they looked normal to me. That being said I never got into them like I probably could have. When I did RTTS we had a cruise the night before. Damn thing stopped so quick it kinda scared me. So Not knowing where the lockup window window was I took it easy figuring I could work up to it by the end of the day. Then the engine went so never got to push it hard. The only thing 4 wheel discs and bigger discs will do is cool better if pushed continually hard and even then it you are gonna have to push them lap after lap. Some will also depend on the track. And you can have a set for the street so the wheels don't get dirty quick and the Porterfields for the autoX or track. I also suggest better hoses. I got mine from Inline Tube. Between those two things It is amazing.

Good ideas I copied your notes on the next pair of rear brake shoes. I bought Russell braided soft lines. The Moser shoes are 2.5 inches wide.

body restoration pictures

I was at the restoration place and here are a few pictures of the body on the rotisserie. Top coat may start going by the middle of October. FYI-I got a GREAT deal on the body restoration and paint because I agreed that my car was to be a fill in in between other cars and it would take at least a year. I did this because I'm paying cash for the build and needed a jump start on building the rolling chassis.

Stardate 10-3-2011 progress

Getting alot of little things done, studying-learning as I go. Installed the Moser rear finned brake kit, actually restored and use the original 64 parking brake cables. I bought a 67 Cutlass TH400 intermediate brake cable-discovered that this cable is the same length as a my 200R4 conversion. Got a Willwood proportioning valve, some 3/8 brake line, flaring kit and bender. After alot of practice with these tools I made the rear lines of the Moser rear. I used Russell braided soft line line for the front and rear. I also fabricated some braces to support the new position of the crossmeber-200R4 conversion is different on a 64-65 Cutlass frame.

breake lines bent and double flarred

I used the 90/10 alloy EZIBEND tubing for the brake lines extremely user friendly. Pictures show where I decided to put the Wilwood proportioning valve and distribution block.

I'm not sure I would face the valve down like that. If you are going for the pro street look, the stance should be fairly low. The valve might be at risk of being broken off. Maybe face it side ways, or face it forward or backwards.

Good point, how ever if you turn it over I don't know if you will be able to get to it with the body on. I know it's only going to be adjusted/tweaked once. There is another 1/2 inch or so room to move it up a little more. Otherwise I may have to re-position that and the distribution valve.

64 ROCKET point well taken. Last night I repositioned the proportioning valve to face sideways. I fabbed a brace out of 1/8 inch plate. Need to paint it and there we go. Thanks.

I am also following and enjoying your build. I am currently just doing a street resto on a owner installed 67 trac-pak. After I enjoy it for awhile I plan to do brake and suspension upgrades as winter projects. I am 'filing away' a lot of your hints and ideas for the future. Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see it finished!

The return of the 400E

I have been in dissussion with a few fellow gearheads and made a corp. decission based on their feedback. For now I am going to move forward and install the 67 400E that I have sitting on the engine stand and build the "badboy 425" later. The point being use up what I have, It's an internally stock 67 400E, maybe 5K miles since the overhaul that came out of my 67. It's does have a performer, 800CFM Edelbrock, W-Z's, Morroso pan, 65 A-heads, RobMac mini starter, HEI. Ran great when I pulled it. That said I just sent out the 200R4 but having it built to support the 425 later on. Just will change out the converter. I am just getting started to mock up the later model PS/ alt brackets. Also getting alot of the parts sorted out for powder coat, media blasting, cleaning and polishing, and or rechroming. Right now the core support, headlight assemblies, grill parts are all being restored and in front of the line because the restoration center may be calling for the rolling chassis after Thanksgiving. I want the motor/trans installed and the core support on when they put the body back on-Then I will be stoked but out of cash when I pay his bill!!

moving along

The core support is out for powder coat along with a bunch of other parts. The 200R4 should be ready around Thanksgiving. Taylor 8MM plug wires, wire looms, some trim moldings on the way. Have to decide soon where to get the F-85 emblems, Oldsmobile letters and other trim pieces re-finished asap. The F-85, V-8 emblems, need to be on the fenders before installing the fenders. The core support and everything that goes on with it is a major restoration piece in itself!! Also have received some e-mails about what is all involved with a B-spindle upgrade/with IROC-Z (1-LE package only) rotors and Caprice police car calipers. Thanks a bunch and here are a few pictures of the finished product.

Things are moving along have all the 72 alt/PS brackets/pulleys powder coated and installed, gave the W-Z's a good coat of cast iron paint, stabbed the HEI at TDC cut and installed the Taylor 9MM wires, greased all the joints doubled checked all the bolts make sure they are tight/torqued. Installed a new power steering pump and hooked the high pressure side up to the Lee Steering box. I fabbed a 64 442 aircleaner using a two Starfire air cleaners. Using the 64 breathers too! Including the oil fill breather. Just mixing some old with the new. The high performance 200R4 and converter is done going to pick up today.
