firewall insulation confusion

Hi all. New here, my second posting. I needed a new heater core in my 1970 442(NonAC), so I rebuilt the whole box and got some new firewall insulation from OPG. My confusion is this. Does the heater box REALLY sit on top of the insulation. I would have thought the box (and its rubber gasket) would have actually kissed the metal firewall but the way the holes in the padding look is that the padding is sandwiched between firewall and heater box. Is that correct?
Thanks Neal Z.

Great question! I just went and looked at mine (non AC also) and yes, the inside box does sit over top of the firewall insulation.

It does in my 67 too, I dont really like it and may do some changes when i reinstall the heater assembly. It cant be seen easily so why not make it better.
