This may be an odd question, but what all is it made of? It feels like it's all metal, but I'm worried that it may have a coat of something over the metal. I really can't tell. The reason I ask is because I'd like to powder coat my steering wheel. But I need to be sure it's all metal so I can stick it in the oven...

You can repair cracks in the plastic with a kit from POR 15. They also include paint specifically formulated to adhere to the plastic. If your steering wheel is in decent shape besides the color you can get spray paint from the hardware store that is also made to adhere to plastic.

My steering wheel looks like it was originally dark green, but was painted white at some point. But now a lot of white has been worn off and you can see the dark spots under it.

Well, I was thinking of redoing it in white. The steering wheel is in excellent shape, it just has the white paint rubbed off. Can't really afford to buy a repro.

Krylon makes a good paint for plastic called fusion I have been told it works good for making white wall tires Larry vintageozarks.com

NEW reproduction '55 steering wheel is $295 from Fusick. Expensive? Maybe - but where else you going to find a new one?

some may argue this one, I carefully filled the cracks in my steering wheel with BONDO and sanded it down, then a light sand on the rest of the wheel which is plastic, I then strung it up on the ceiling and sprayed it with Blue lacquer several light coats, that was nearly 30 yrs ago and it still looks like new. there were no problems with this at all, and since the lacquer dried very fast. takes a little time. and I was worried about the lacquer attacking the plastic, but it worked for me.

Frank Allen: Now that you resurrected a thread from 2008 , in case anyone else is interested, the steering wheel in those years was made of Bakelite, and in another thread, PC-7 (dark) or PC-11 (off white) were recommended for filling cracks. I used PC-11 about four years ago and it's still looking good.

Yep, this is a old thread. Good advise from ignchuck though. I found that the sweat/oil from my hands would cause the the spray can paint on my first wheel job to eventually soften and come off. The next time I rebuilt the wheel I used a polyurethane single stage automotive finish with a hardener, lasted for years.... Tedd

ignachuck, , not sure about the 2008 thread, I always thought the steering wheel is plastic, however not a expert, I do however simply post things I have done to help others out since I have been driving these cars since they were new. and I love the 54 55. guess I will be careful what I say moving forward.what is PC 11??

Frank, didn't mean anything bad. We've all done it and this is a good topic to revisit now and again. Bakelite is in the plastic family. Someone smarter than me can explain it.

Frank Allen: PC-11 is an epoxy. Best to google it for lots of info.
