I have a question about lock tumblers for my '72 Cutlass.

I had the door locks replaced last year when I the car was re-painted because the drivers side lock was quirky and I wanted all the locks to match. I didn't really think about replacing the tumblers or re-keying the locks that were ok yet. It just never occured to me.

After the door and trunk locks were replaced, I immediately recognized that the new key for these exterior locks was also used for the console lock and the glove box lock. I did not have any new lock cylinders for those two compartments.

I read in the shop manual that the cyliners could be re-keyed if a person has a set of tumbers. Originally there was a part number and a kit for this. I also read that the Fisher body manual has the charts to determin the code of he keys.

Assuming I decode the keys correctly, does anyone know where/ how I might come up wiht a set or two of the tumblers?

Buy up old used locks when available??? Go to the junk yard and get locks from any similar vintage GMC vehicle (if I can find any)???

Before you take apart your locks and mess things up take the car to a locksmith and ask him. They are professionals and they might be able to do it reasonably.

 

Olds Fan.......that looks good on paper but I went to oneof the oldest GM (Buick ) dealers in the local area and the parts manager there said go to a lock smith.

Quite frankly I doubt that this bozo even knows what a 1972 GM lock cylinder looks like or what the tumblers look like.

The only redeeming part of the expereience was the service manager. Early 30's female, tall thin and VERY interested in my Cutlass!

Guess I'll try the lock smith?

Guess I'm just kind'a down on service people after the steering wheel incident.

The guy that painted the car last year was a big talker too but the result was just ok.

The folks that did the transmission, parked the chassis out in the open and the birds did a number on it, which ate into the paint, which gave me a couple days of intense rubbing and polishing.

Seems like everything about this car has been trouble. More from the people doing the work than the work itself.

I'm looking at a new top before winter. That ought to be real trip! I can't wait to hear the song and dance from the shop that does that job for me!
