The '69-'72 Shifter cable f/s exc. DG...
https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...questions.html
Gr. 4.047, PN 407409 [how is that for a dylsexic's (sic) nightmare?]
here is TPP offering at $132 delivered
http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/2716098...lpid=82&chn=ps
My question for youse guys is
Why is this NEVER listed as fitting the 1968 442. Is this another "1968 is one year only" thing or are all the sellers failing to list it correctly? Different end peg sizes?
The 1975 CD PN Manual shows this PN used ONLY on 70-72 F85's (with AT and console shift [duh])
With "67-68 T.H. Floor Shift exc. Tor." using PN 396596
and no other models using this PN.

OK so none of you experts chimed in to help.
For the benefit of future readers- evidently 67 and 68 used the same stubby AT console, this the same shifter location, thus the same cable.
1969-72 used a much longer console, put the sfifter if a different location? and therefore used a longer cable.
DG = Dual Gate shifter and console are entirely different and so that is another story for another day.
Oh wait, this appears to be a 1969 F85 console
http://cdn.barrett-jackson.com/stagi...terior_Web.jpg
which looks to me just like a 1968 setup.
This is clearly [ign switch in dash] a 1968 442 with the same console
http://cdn.barrett-jackson.com/stagi...terior_Web.jpg
Of course either could have been altered over the years.

I guess I will continue to spread info in a vacuum here in case anyone searches later. Since NOT ONE person here appears to have any useful input.
Inquired of The Parts Place via epay why the cable is listed as not fitting 1968.
"Dear thepartsplaceinc,
is there any reason the gm 407409 cable would not fit the 1968 442 if it fits the 1969 version of the car??
- *the*rocketscientist"
and they reply with no additional detail the knee-jerk answer:
"They are different. Thank you"
Well, that clears it right up, then.
Sounds a lot like the "Oh no header's won't fit a Cutlass SUPREME" bullshed that every counter person reads and spews forth as Gospel.
'68 vs '69 442: the same body, same floor pan, same trans and location, same trans cable bracket, same shifter in the same location on the floor, same console, same EVERYTHING down to the smallest detail.... yet the "cable is different".
BULLSNORT.
So, y'all are going to make me order one and test fit it on the '68 to find out, eh?

Chris
The 1967 and 1968 had different cables than the 1969 and up, different part numbers.
The Jetaway was a different cable than the T400 even.
Trying to find some NOS ones for the differences for the book.
1967-68 Jetaway #396327
1967-68 T400 #396599
The 1968 Hurst/Olds the cable came from Hurst.

Hmmmmmm.... good idea
That might make the bracket on the selector shaft [PRNDSL shaft] different from 68 vs 69, which might make the cable slightly different in length or perhaps end-hole size.
In that case, WORST case, in order to use the readily available '69+ cable on my '68 442 Auto trans std issue floor shift I would have to.... oh dear God.... change the bracket on the trans selector shaft, and live with the ugly thought that the car is no longer 47% original [we gave on 100, or even 90% original long ago!].
Since the interwebs says that
1967-68 T400 #396599
is simply not available, even at any of the Hoarders...
The only choice is to buy the PN 407409 and find out exactly what the dealio is.
Stand by... [this may take a while]

More info today stating that the shifters ARE NOT identical.
Man says he traded me one part for another to get his '68 right.
I do not recall the details but will now be looking for difference details in cable mounting.

OK, dredging this up from the crypt in memory of Chris Witt.
I'm going through this right now as I convert my 67 Delta to buckets and console. Some interesting reading in the parts book. Apparently the P/Ns for all parts of the AT floor shift are different from 67-68 to 69 to 70-up. In all cases these are not applicable to Toros, only A/B-body cars.
Lever on trans - obviously the 69-up levers are different due to the added tabs for the backdrive linkage
67-68 396290 (TH400) and 396330 (Jetaway)
69 402993 (TH400 incl dual gate) and 402992 (Jetaway)
70-72 406658 (all AT)
Bracket on trans (to hold cable)
67-68 396287 (TH400)
67-69 396326 (Jetaway)
69-72 402991 (TH400) and 402990 (TH350)
Shift cable
67-68 396596 (TH400) and 396327 (Jetaway)
69-70 402989 (all AT)
70-72 407409 (all AT, stock shifter) and 406266 (all AT, dual gate)
Yeah, I realize there is an overlap in the shift cable listings for 1970. I'm just the messenger.
