VIN Production numbers, vehicle search
Question: My 1968 Cutlass Supreme has a production number of 33,518. Why would the last six digits of my VIN# read 109409? I understand what the first 5 numbers and letter Z (#34287Z109409) signify that precede the 109409. Is there a definition for the "1" before the numbers 09409? I am searching for info on car, starting first with the VIN#. I'd like to possibly see in writing it's history of whereabouts. I have pro-tec-to plate and orig. bill of sale. I have pics of car sitting in dry indoor storage at Trevellyan Olds dealer in San Diego. I would like to go deeper to learn it's history. Google has a write up on March '90 from that particular dealer was a court document "police property" for two Cutlass Supreme Coupes. I don't know if one of those two were my '68 or not. One of pics I have of my '68 also shows a late 80's model Cutlass Supreme in background. From my past experience, I know of asking many of you for advice and info, the responses I get from all of you is the equivelant of info from Webster's and The Bible!
I thank you for your input.

Each Oldsmobile assembly plant got a set of "blank" VIN tags every model year. These tags were not actually blank, however. As documented in the assembly manual, the VIN tags came pre-stamped with the first character (the "3" to signify Oldsmobile division), the sixth character to signify year, the seventh character to signify assembly plant, and the last six in sequence starting with 100001. Only the second through fifth characters were stamped when the car was built. In your case, the 109409 indicates that yours was the 9,409th Oldsmobile to come down the line at Fremont that year.
And while this does not apply to Fremont cars, the Toronados (which were only built in Lansing) got VIN sequence numbers starting with 500001.

Thanks Joe!
Say... On the "New Thread" page, why is there an arrow in column on the left side of my thread and hyphens in columns on the right? Was my "New Thread" question too involved? It's alarming my question regarding the VIN is on Google page.
