Where did Marge come form ?

Marge, my 1963 Ninety Eight Convertible was originally purchased at the Murphy Oldsmobile Dealer on Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles. I still have the sticker on the inside of the glove box door that tells you to arrange transportation when you bring your car in for service. Here is a picture of the dealership.

No, that is where she was purchased from. She was built at the South Gate Ca. plant, not too far from where she was initially sold.

Mine was purchased from Jack Thompson Oldsmobile. In Oak Lawn, IL

"---Jack Thompson Oldsmobile was known as the "Home of the Free Loaner Car". The main building's showroom only held 8 cars, but behind the service department was a 50 car indoor showroom. This rooftop sign burned bright for over 50 years. On August 2, 2002, through tear filled eyes I watched, along with former employees, mechanics and customers as this dealership was reduced to a pile of rubble. ---"

Go to Roadsidepeek.com and there's a lot of old dealership photos.

When I was a kid growing up back in Columbus Ga. There was "Rustin Oldsmobile" and sure enough they were, right around where the dealer would drill those name badges in the trunk lid!

Bought my Alero (Redog) at Faulkner Oldsmobile which was on Haldelman & Bustleton Aves in Northeast Philadelphia. Only had 6 miles on it, I was the 2and person to test drive it and the test drive was 6 miles It was built in Lansing Michgan. Faulkner is still in business, but sold that dealership to a Honda dealer and sold off the Mitsu lot next door just a few years ago

The Delta came from a Dealership in Valley Stream, NY. Oddly enough, right around the corner from where my wife grew up. I don't know the dealer's name, but it's on the owner's manual folder, which came with the sale of the car 20 years later, to me This car was built in Willington, DE, which isn't far from me

I thought all of the Ninety Eights from that era were built in Lansing, MI.

You might be thinking all Starfire converitbles were built in Lansing, perhaps?

We lived in N.E. Philly and when I was a kid I would go with my dad to look at the Oldsmobiles at Faulkners and my dad even bought a few of them. Small world...

I really liked the way I was treated at Faulkner, in fact, I liked it so much, except for the service manager at Faulkner Pontaic on Street Road, I will be buying my next car/truck from them Probably Pontaic, Buick, GMC on Street Road in Trevose

The service manager wasn't a bad guy, I just butted heads with him a little bit

You local guys probably saw the Redog rolling around

It is cool that you know where your Oldsmobile was sold. Do any of you have a dealer emblem? My 98 was from LA. I had an emblem with the car when I bought it that had the name of the dealership, but it was ancient and worn.

The Alero does, but it's a decal not an emblem. The Delta doesn't

Oh yeah. My emblem is there, and I'm keepin it there. It is pretty sweet.
Jack Thompson had good taste and had his dealership name badges made up in cursive like the Oldsmobile script.

California had some kind of law for years, where that a dealer could not add their name plate ( decal or emblem ) to a vehicle. I think that's obsolete now as I see some cars with decals such as "CarMax" .

My 63 CSM shows starting VIN for Starfires and Ninety Eights at all assembly plants- Lansing, Atlanta, KC, Linden NJ, South Gate, Wilmington DE and Arlington TX. As far as I know Starfires were built at all assembly plants from late 1961 thru 1966, though early 61's were built only in Lansing.

1964-70, CSM clearly states "Ninety Eight assembled only in Lansing". They reopened the Linden Ninety Eight assembly line in 1971.

Lemme see- The blue Starfire (Linden-built) came from Swanson Cad-Olds here in Danville. The Ninety Eight (also Linden) was sold new at Stohlman Olds in Alexandria VA. Hurst/Olds (Lansing) came from Massey Motor Company in Kinston NC. The Toronado (Lansing) was delivered to Black Cad-Olds in Greensboro NC and then sold new at Carl Johnson Olds in Reidsville NC on a dealer exchange.

The Cruiser wagon (KC) was bought new at Gowen Olds in Charlotte NC and the Bravada (it's a Blazer in drag, who cares where it was built?) also came from Black.

I have no idea where the green Starfire was sold new as I bought it out of Massillon OH, but it is a Lansing-built car.

I don't have any hard proof, but since Starfire convertibles were simply exceptionally well trimmed 88 convertible bodies, I'd think they were built at all plants. The only exception I can think of might be the 65 due to the unique fender-exit exhaust, and again, that isn't much different from a comparable 1965 88 convertible QP.

Generally if production was limited to certain plants. either the CSM or the Service Guilds/Tech Bulletins will mention it.

I saw a guy with an old Ford Fairlane and he had a plastic Jesus in a tube with the dealer's name on the bottom of it. That was pretty COOL!

Well... they ARE . Look at it this way. Makes finding Starfire convertible body panels easier, unlike having to find a 63-66 coupe full quarter panel.

What's that word I've heard you use before? Unobtainium?
