Anyone here built their own GM 200-4R ??
Just looking to score some tools or input on where I can get them inexpensively or rent them.
Trying to not spend $300+ in tools I'm probably only going to use once.
I was told the main 2 I'll need are these
http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/kd2398.html
http://www.etoolcart.com/low-reverse...installer.aspx
and this ordeal to hold the center section together for me while reinstalling it all.

With all the GM dealerships closing down, Kent-Moore tools are all over ebay. I've collected all the 200-4R tools except a few of the bushing drivers for cheap. I set up a search script for the specific J-numbers.

if i were you id have it built by a pro!!!!! is your 200r4 a grandnational tranny or a regular 200r4?? my friend owns mizzi's automotive there 1 of the top grandnational shops in CA when my 87 nationals tranny blew he told me 2 take it 2 a shop that specialized in 200r4's and i didnt listen, i ended up spending 750 on the build and it blew 3 times in a row, the tranny blew every time i punched it, if you have a grand national trans you have 2 take it 2 some1 who knows how 2 build grand national 200r4's THERE DIFFERENT THAN REGULAR 200R4'S, dont listen 2 people who say that there the same THERE NOT!! i had hughes trans in fairfield CA build mine the 1st time, they kept saying dont worry they build 200r4s all the time for taxi companys and that all 200r4s are the same, they didnt know what they were talkn about!! they built it, they installed it, and it blew each time we punched it on the test drive!! after the 3rd blow i took it 2 a shop that knew how 2 build grand national 200's and the owner said hes seen this happen a bunch of times with grand nationals 200's he told me that GN 200's are differnt than taxi, caddi and regular 200s and have 2 be build correct or they blow, he also told me that regular 200r4's are VERY VERY WEEK trannys and that you need a grand national 200R4 if your going 2 have any amount of HP, the problem with grand national 200s are there 800-1500 for a good core and very hard 2 find, i paid 1700 for him 2 build it with a new stall and i never had a problem again!! trust me ive owned 4 grand nationals in the last 10 years dont listen 2 some1 who hasnt owned 1

Thanks, so you got tools for it still or what??
BTW I turned down 2 BRF cores this past week ranging from $150 to $250 on TurboBuick's site.
Another BQ one for $100 I also turned down.
I already spoke with Chris from CK Performance, and Jake from Jakes Performance.
Don't worry, I got all my strengthening parts here already.

I have put together a few of them, including the one running in my '72 Vista Cruiser. So far so good after 3 seasons of driving long distances and to many events. I have made a few home made tools and have used what is at hand to do some of the work such as C-clamps and adapters to compress clutch springs on the drums, and check, checked and double checked what was done each step to ensure the units would have a fighting chance of working from the word 'go'. Doing them at your own leisure and time constraints makes it easier for sure. To note, they are more complex inside then a Turbo-350 or a Turbo-400 for sure. It is certainly agreed with sx455raidercelticfan that all the units are not created equal, and you have to study and know and have the proper books and procedures before you tackle a particular unit. There were many upgrades along the span of life these 200-R4's were produced and the GN units saw many improvements. I will be opening up one a friend procured not too long ago to help him refresh it, but I will be asking GN folks who know these units the story on them. The lesson is, go well versed, if you feel stuck or are not sure, ask somebody who has been down the road. Howie.
