1968 350 quedtions

I have a 1985 olds 442 with 200 r4, 373 rear end. starting rebuild on a 1968 olds 350, #5 heads,. Was a 2 barell motor. Was thinking of putting 10.25 pistons, leaving #5 alone except 3 angle valve and general clean up. Was wondering what would be best approach at making good street power. Should I bore it 30 over, put new springs etc on heads? Was going to have block gone over new berrings etc, what would be a good cam? Trying to keep compression around 9.5 . Any good advice would be helpful. I built a stout 10.1 307 but just not enough grunt any more. Thanks for any replies.

By 10.25 pistons do you mean advertised ??? Im running a 355 olds i built with 10 to 1 compression on pump gas 93 with # 6 heads with just big valves , Lunati voodoo cam , th350 that i also built backed by 3.90 gears runs 12.4's in my 72 cutlass. Lots more to the combo but i dont want to flood the thread unless you have intrest in the combo im running. Its still a street car and has great street manners.

This is the first time trying to build a motor on my own.looking for a good reliable street motor that is faster than my 10.1 307.

Yes to advertise compression. I figured I won't be near that maybe 9.5 with some head milling

Welcome to the site Mark. Have you spoke with a machine shop in your area yet? They will have some of the answers for you. Your budget will be an important topic in this discussion.

Hi Mark. Since you've been around the block with your 307 that should be a good primer on what to do with the 350.

About boring, you will most likely need to bore it out. At .020 leaves you little piston choice, so .030 is logical. But what does the bore say? Will it clean up at .020?It needs to be measured. Like my other post too you, find a machine shop and share your goals with them..and your budget.

The valve spring pressures should match the cam you purchase. Make sure they jive together.

I won't give cam suggestions, thats like picking girlfriends.

Try to build the stoutest short block you can within your budget. If its done right, you can build even more on it later. Put the best piston you can in there.
