Yes, that's what the TACH terminal is for.

You might check your tachometer to see if there is a switch on the back of it. Sometimes tachometers will have a switch which differentiates between 4 cylinder and 8 cylinder. This could cause your tachometer reading to be bad.

No, my tachometer comes from a oldsmobile 1966,no switch inside, but was there a tachometer for a 6-cylinder that time?

does it seem like the engine is actually idling at 400 rpm?
what is the reading an external tach gives you? factory tachs aren't usually very accurate, btw. bill

I know you can get tachometers adjusted. If it has never been serviced then maybe 42 years have caused it to read inaccurately.

You can generally rent a tachometer at the local auto parts store. Or at least, you used to be able to get ahold of them.

Where did you order your tachometer and is it the cluster tach? The set of 3 that reads your oil, RPM, and volts or water temp? I have seen a few Olds with them below the dash, but I am having trouble finding them. Thanks

What does the needle do when you rev it to 8500 rpm? I thought you put a girdle and aftermarket connecting rods on your engine.

Is it running smooth?
Leave it where it is. If it doesn't die when you put it in gear, or at a light it's fine. |

when I start the engine, I must push the accelerator pedal depressed slightly for a few seconds otherwise the engine stalls. engine hot or no. (i don't have a choke)
I shall check by raising a little slowed to 550-650 rpm on drive to see... thank |
