Electric Choke

Can I wire my electric choke to the purple wire on my starter solenoid? I believe it is 12V ignition from the neutral safety switch.

The purple wire is only hot with the key in the START position. Your choke will never heat up and open. I really like using an oil pressure switch so that the choke only starts to open once the engine is running. There are lots of two-wire oil pressure switches available for cars with electric chokes (Airtex 1S6546, $6.12 from RockAuto, for example). Simply use a switched, fused +12v source to feed the switch, then from there to the choke.

Thanks Joe. I guess I will pick one of those up this evening. I haven't bought a replacement for my oil pressure switch yet anyways. I assume that this goes behind the water pump in the normal place for the oil pressure switch?

I also did some research on wiring my HEI ignition. I decided to splice a wire into my fuse box at the "IGN" terminal. This is the pink wire that goes to all of the lamps in the dash and to the firewall where it changes to the "resistance" wire. I removed the yellow wire that previously ran from the starter to the coil.

I use the NAPA smart electric choke, and take the 12 volts off of the wiper motor.

I went to O'Reillys last night and bought one of the oil pressure switches Joe mentioned. I found out that the threads on the switch were 1/4" and the threads in the block are 1/8". I went to the hardware store and got an adapter. I plan on installing it this evening. Thanks for the tip Joe.

Keep in mind that the switch I showed you was just an on-off switch for the electric choke. You will need to tee it in with your regular oil pressure sensor.
