horn contacts

I've been trying to get my horn to work on my '70 Cutlass w/4 spoke wheel. I pulled the spring-load contact pin and there was a small brass button at the end of the spring that was loose inside the hole. I looked at a previous thread on this and did not see any mention of this piece. I'm wondering if something broke off further in (I'd like to avoid pulling the wheel and tearing down further if possible). Anyone have any input on this?
