Now a 67 Delta 88 Custom AND a 66 Delta 88 coupe ... in Australia !

Greetings to all from Australia once again,
I bought a 66 for it's motor but it's too cool to scrap so it looks like I'm going to be doing one of two things ...
1. sell it minus the motor ( a 425ci like my 67 )
2. do it up too !

Still working on which way to go.

While contemplating that I have gone completely "over the top" with my 67 Delta 88 Custom !
It is now in a workshop to get ...
1. reco of the 425 to "mild street" for LPG only ( no more petrol ).
2. auto to be reconditioned
3. LPG only system using twin Gas Research throttle bodies and twin tanks.
4. engine bay clean up
5. a set of 18inch multifit wire wheels and tyres !

It's costing a bundle but it will be fun when it's done

Then it will be off to get the suspension and brakes freshened up and then off to paint !

check out my olds site for updates as they happen - http://groups.msn.com/MyAussie67Olds88

Cheers all,

Good luck with them both. I wish I could just give you one of the motors I have laying around.

There was a rotten 67 for sale around here not too long ago, but it didn't look as cool without the Amber taillights.

That is cool that you are doing a project like that, especially in Australia. I bet it would be near impossible to find parts for an Olds in the land down under.

I think it is neat that you are having the engine retro fitted to run off of LPG. If you could give us some more info on that it would be cool. I know I am interested in that. I have done some reading on bio diesel and ethanol fuels.

I will have to check out your website. Keep us posted.

Amber tail-lights and LPG

The amber rear bumper lights are home made ... honest... when the previous owner restored the vehicle to Australian Design Regs about 20 years ago he was required to have amber indicators as the red lenses would have been illegal.
I now have the original lenses to go back in when the vehicle is painted.
Good pick up J-(chicago)

Olds64, I have a one ton tray running off LPG only already.
LPG is the main alternative to petrol here at about 50c a litre compared to $1.30 for low octane unleaded ( add another 10c a litre for Premium ULP ).
It also gets around many of the emission requirements regarding ULP, like having to run a catalytic converter in the exhaust etc.

It uses high flow throttle bodies similar to a throttle body used in injection systems... with single and twin applications the simplest.
combinations of 400cfm to 480cfm throttle bodies regulating the amount of air-fuel mixture.
I will put a pic or two on the site to show you how it looks.

How much is LPG over there compared to Petrol ?

I know that if you want to convert an older car to run Ethanol, you have to replace the entire fuel system. You have to have a special type of tank, fuel lines, injectors, a computer management system of some sort (MegaSquirt, for instance), etc...also, I think you have to have really high compression, at least 11.5 preferably 12:1.

That's what I've heard anywho.

Where I live, 94 octane (highest pump gas available here) is around $3.00- $3.10 a gallon, while e85Ethanol (115 octane) is $2.50 - $2.80 a gallon.

The area I am in has similar gasoline prices. It is $2.75 / gallon for regular unleaded and about $3.00 / gallon for premium. Unfortunately, LPG (or propane in the US) isn't readily available as an automobile fuel in my area. I know industrial vehicles use LPG; however, I have never seen it used in an automobile.

I have read that ethanol can be used in automobiles with few modifications. Like Dar83501 mentioned, the fuel system needs to be modified so the seals aren't attacked by the chemicals in ehtanol. Other than that I think all you have to do to a carbureted vehicle is change the jets, and tune carburetor. I have also heard that synthetic oil should be used with frequent oil changes because ethanol causes the oil to deteriorate faster than gasoline. This is all stuff I studied in college, it has just been awhile.

BTW, that is an AWSOME car. I like the tail lights and the color!

Ethanol ... more popular in Australia too now.

Thank you both for your input.

Australians are beginning to accept ethanol mix fuels here as an cheaper alternative to unleaded fuel .... but I have stayed away from it personally as I've heard good and bad regarding it.

LPG has been in Australia as a much cheaper fuel alternative for quite a while now and there is even a government subsidy on installations of $2000 to make it practically free to change ( the average "dual fuel" LPG installation costing about $2500 allowing either petrol or LPG to be used ) .

My installation is much more specialised with the intention of rusing only LPG as I have found duel fuel installation can be not good with either fuel or biased to one of them leaving the other inefficient.

the twin set-up will look much impressive

Sorry All,
Sold the 66 Dynamic 2 door last weekend... and the new owner is rapt.

He called me yesterday and said "You never fired this motor did you ?" ... I admitted I never got the chance and thought he was going to tell me it was bad news, as I had actually bought the car for it's motor !

Then he said "She's a beauty mate ! ... runs like a Swiss clock !" and I breathed a sigh of relief ! as he is a great contact for bits and importing of Olds parts ... phew.

So, all's well that ends well... he got a good thing and I got my $$ back .. a good deal all around.

I look forward to seeing the ole 66 coupe back on the road in his hands... with an injected big block !

cheers for now

Gary,

I enjoyed the pics of your engine in particular. You have a Torker on the final pictures but mentioned the stock manifold eariler. I thought you were going to use that stock one. Did you change your plans? And I definitely want to see the LPG setup with the throttle bodies, do they mount above the intake manifold in the place of the carburetor or do they take the place of the intake manifold too? Just curious.

Hi Oldsguy,
LPG runs at it's best into a single plane manifold so I had bought the Torker prior to finding out I needed another engine.

The W-455 manifold came with the 455 I bought to replace the motor that had been in my 67 Olds 88... and I am going to sell it to help re-coup some $$.

The twin throttle bodies have an adapto that sits where the carb goes similar to that used for running side draft webers on a V8... if you have ever seen that.

If I can find a pic of a set up on something else I will post it on my Olds website.

Well, the engine boys reckon they will have the motor on the engine dyno next week so I am hoping to see rapid progress once the engine is back to the workshop as the t400 is back already.

More news as it happens,
