57 /58 371

I think I saw somwhere that the 57 and 58 371 was externally balanced If that is correct were they done like Chevys with the dampner & flywheel

Yes and yes.

If you are using a 303/324 trans behind a 371, have the early flywheel transfer balanced to the late one, and use the late damper. For 12 volts, use a '53-'55 (or '56 Hydro) starter to match the flywheel.
