will an A body rear end fit a G body?
i am sure that this has ben asked before but i can't find it. now that i got an O type 3.42, i want to sell my 8.5 4.10 posi. i don't know what all cars it will fit to list it. i was going to put it on craigslist.

A-body axles are wider than G-body axles (yes, I know that the 78-81 cars were still called A-bodies) and the upper control arm bosses are at a different angle. They can be force-fit with aftermarket control arms and custom offset wheels. At that point it's less expensive to get a correct G-body axle.

??? some what confused at info...
so you have a 12 bolt 3.42 'O' type complete rear you are putting in a G-body chassis??? YES?
You want to sell a 8.5 4.10 complete rear or just the guts? If it is the whole housing your selling we will need to know the year car it was from . If it is JUST the posi and gears (GUTS) they will fit all 1970 -1981 cars with 8.5 rears
some are-
-1973-1977 Monte Carlo, Regal, grand Prix, Cutlas, El camino
-1970-1981 Camaro, Firebird, Trans Am
-1972-1979 Nova, Apollo, omega, skylark with v8 motors
-1974-1988 Chevy and GMC 1/2 trucks and SUV
-1984-1987 GN and 442
-1970-1988 full size Impala, Lesabre, 88 98 olds, wagons (they did start early on the 30 spline wagon rears in 87 88 ish ...Touchy area.
I am sure there are more but that should be a very good start.
Again if it is a housing / complete rear that is 4.10 posi we will need to know the vehicle it was removed from for info on cars it will fit. Jim

the one i want to sell is the 8.5 10 bolt cover rear from a 71 or 72 cutlass. the housing is an R2 code that was originally a single track 2.56:1. someone in it's history changed it to a limited slip with a 4.10 Richmond gear set. 69-0165-1 is the number for the gear set. the carrier i believe is a stock limited slip one from another rear end. i do not believe it is an aftermarket carrier. the carrier has some marks where the pinion rubbed it in the past. a local guy said that it is not hurt and that the gear set that is in it did not do it because there is no sign of their being any rubbing on the pinion. i am no rear end expert to know but it looks good inside other than the marks in the carrier. it is in a 69 cutlass now and works fine. i sold the car so i have to get the rear end out soon.

i was going to try and sell it localy because it is not worth much for an original number rear end. if someone wanted to pick it up i would like to get $400 for it but not sure the value of it.

thanks for the input Jim. i just picked up an SH O type 3.42:1. with the price of gas and the price i paid i have $412 in it. so if i get $412 out of this 8.5 i will be happy.
