Info on 442 or Cutlass Supreme?

Hi every i'm so happy to find this site maybe someone can help me with some info. I have a 1972 cutlass supreme but the other day i was looking in the glove compartment and came across a old sticker and it read F85 4-4-2 so I did some checking on the vin # and is says the car came with 455-4bbl V8 250 hp dual exh. Does this make this a 442 or was it just an option, What do I have on my hands?

Hi and Welcome,
A 455 was not exclusive to the 442. The Cutlass Supreme Coupe was only offered with one body style, the Notch Back Roof. The 442 and Cutlass S came with the fast back roof. The trip plate on the firewall will tell you if the car is a 442, Cutlass S or a Cutlass Supreme.

Re:

In a different thread, Texasred posted this link, which should answer some of your questions:

http://www.v8cars.hu/oldsvin/decode.php

In response to one of your earlier threads regarding color, my brother gave me a book to decode all the different numbers/codes on the car. Quoted from the book:

"Two, two digit codes indicate the bottom and top colors respectively."
Covert Beige......50
Baroque Gold......57

Since 57 (gold) is your "top" code, I assume this means that it was the stripe color.

Hope this helps some!

The 57 top color is not a stripe color, it's the color the roof itself was painted instead of having a vinyl top. If the whole car was the same color, it would be 50 50 PNT for instance.

As stated (much) earlier, no '72 Supreme hardtops were W29 442s. You have the 250 net hp L75 455 (U in the VIN).
