1967 Cutlass Supreme

I'm looking at a 67 Cutlass Supreme project car. I've got a couple of questions because I'm not that familiar with 67's or Supremes.

First - the hood has two rows of louvers in the middle and no center moulding. Is this hood an option or is it a 442 or Supreme thing?

It's a bench seat car that has a folddown center armrest. Was the armrest standard on all Supremes?

The car is a two door hardtop. There seams to be a mismatch between the door panels and rear side panels. The pattern is the same, but top corners where they meet are different. The door panels are flatter. The rear panels go out about 1-1/2" then down. My first 'driver' car was a 67 Cutlass (years ago) and I don't remember the mismatch. Could these be conv. rear panels?

I'm not an expert with the 1967 either, but I've got three of them as project cars. One 442, one Cutlass Supreme and one Cutlass convertible. They all need work though! I thought the louvers in the hood were a 442 option only. I'm not sure if the bench seats in any of my cars are original, but they do have the fold down arm rest. Wes up in B.C. Canada has helped me in the past, and he has several 1967's. His name on this site is Ranzan and you might send him a pm. I am NO expert in 67`s there are alot more guys more knowledgable than myself

The louvered hood only came on 442`s
Center armrest bench seat was an option just like bucket seat`s.
now as far as the door panels are concerned pictures are worth a thousand words in this case. there were 3 different door panels in 67
The F-85 panels Sport Coupe and Holiday Coupe
The Cutlass, Cutlass Supreme Holiday Coupe panels
The Cutlass Supreme Sport Coupe panels. but on these panels they also came on certain cutlass holiday models. I have these panels on both my Sport Coupe and Holiday car
The Sport Coupe door panel does not wrap the top 2 inchs of the door into the glass area there is a stainless trim that the panel tucks into. These panles are not repopped yet unlike the Holiday models

You may not be experts but you're sure more knowledgeable than me.

I'm the proud owner of yet another project car! It'll take me a few weeks to get it home. Current plan is to get it drivable so I can take it to the com. college to do body work. It's pretty straight, one dent on the right rear corner. Pretty rust free also, but the whole top has surface rust.

Not sure if I'll keep the louvered hood or not. The bench seat with folddown armrest was one of the deciding factors on my purchase. It may not be rare, but I like it! The factory AC helped me decide also.

I clicked a picture of the door panels. It's just that the back panel protrudes out more at the top than the door panel. The panels match so I guess it's correct. The seller had a 70? conv. W car so I click a few picts. of it too. (not for sale)

OK guys, a little update. First I'll give you your daily laugh. When I looked at the car I couldn't get the hood to unlatch. The hinges were off so I peeked in by lifting the rear of the hood. What I mistook for an A/C compressor was an air pump (smog pump). No factory A/C, darn it. I know, I know... stop laughing.

Anyway, got the car to a buddy's place. Temporarily replaced the broken windshield. Rust in the lower channel is into the dash quite a bit. I thought I got it sealed up, but it's still leaking. I need to add some urethane when, if the rain stops. After I pulled the old windshield I pulled the old carpet and pad.

Pulled the motor and installed the used 330 I had. Didn't get any keys with the car. So I replaced the trunk lock and ignition switch. Fired the engine up yesterday! But no radiator, so I only let it run about a minute. The hood hinges were in the trunk so I sandblasted them and rattle can painted them. Still a little problem with the latch.

The brakes are shot. I've replaced the master cylinder and power booster. I've got new front and rear hoses and shoes plus rear wheel cylinders. Park brake is also frozen, so that's on the list too.

Waiting to purchase front wheel cylinders and maybe bearings and seals. And the radiator. Not much time or extra funds till after the Holidays. Hope to have it running in time for the first class at the CC in mid January.

OK, one more laugh. The used engine didn't have a distributor. So I used the one from the engine in the car. Wired the plugs and tried it a few weeks ago. No luck. Sunday morning I was going to try it again. Checked the board here before hand. John (2blu442) had answered a post about smoke coming out of the carb. or something like that. Yeah I'd wired it backwards. Didn't even consider that til I read John's post. Pretty much fired right up when I wired it right. Thanks John!

Yes, we all have to prove we're human once in a while So Don, now that you have the car are you going to post pictures so we can see what your working with? I still haven't got the 1967 442 project driving yet, and haven't touched the yellow 1967 Cutlass since I towed it home. The yellow one has an AC dash, but a previous owner removed everything under the hood. John

No A/C, but the A.I.R. means that is was originally sold in California. Only CA cars got the A.I.R. system in 66-67. I'm guessing it was built in Fremont.

That lower channel IS reproduced. I've not seen them advertised for Oldsmobiles, but I got one from a Pontiac vendor. It's the same part on all the 64-67 A-body cars.

Here's a couple of photos. Not much to look at, yet. The new windshield is already installed. The original color was Antique Pewter. Gray primer should give me some idea of what it will look like.

Joe - I've seen the patch channels. Plan to install one next summer. Just need to seal the window up a little better for our rainy winter.

The quarter windows were missing the seals and metal channels. ??? I've got reproductions of both. Anyone even installed the channels?

Don, that is a pretty slick car! I like the older Cutlasses better than the 70-72s. But they all have their charm.

Good to hear that you figured out your distributor problem. Don't worry, I have done the same thing before.

Idaho plates, that explains the lack of rust! I got a project car from Joseph Oregon where the annual rainfall is just a few inches a year. The paint was weathered off from the sun, but no cancer rust. The windshield channel could be from condensation inside the car. I've had a couple cars like that, no cancer but rust at the bottom of the front and back windshield channels. I like the 442 hood, its one of those little touches that set it apart from many other cars. If you wanted to make a 442 clone the hood is probably the most expensive and hard to get item. A diamond in the rough! John

Thanks guys for the kind comments. Before I forget, Joe's right it is a Fremont, CA car.

Olds64 - I never can nail down a favorite. I got a good deal on this. But between 66 & 67's I kinda' prefer 66's. The headlights are closer together and the grill is wider. But it might have something to do with having a 66 Cutlass as a teenager. On the 68 & 69's I like the front of the 68 best. But prefer the back of the 69. I've got a 69 442 project car. If it wasn't a 442.... it may have become a 68/9. On the 70 - 72's I have no preference, other than I like the Cutlass Supreme notch back body style best! With an OAI hood of course! Darn, that got long. And I didn't even mention the 50's, like the Super 88's or the early Starfires of the 60's. See, no favorite - I just want one of each!

John - You might be right about the condensation. The dash is as bad or worse than the outside. Not sure how long it's been in this area. But the screen under the wiper cowl is missing. So I need to take it off and clean out the pine needles before I get another problem.

Wes - Yeah I'll be happy to get it going. Even happier to get it in primer, all one color.

Wow! I would have thought that the only thing in Idaho was potato farms and Napoleon Dynamite.

Picked up the radiator this week. No rain or work today so I installed it with new hoses & cap. Made a couple of trips to Autozone for small parts. Like I bought new hose clamps when I bought the hoses. But none were big enough to fit the bottom hose on the water pump. Bought a Sunpro triple gauge kit on one trip so I could watch the coolant temp.

Looks like everything on the dash and firewall are rusted/frozen. Like the accelerator pedal assembly. Which I took off and freed up with Liquid Wrench today. The park brake pedal assembly is frozen up. And the brake pedal hangs up. Heater controls, headlight switch and possibly the wiper switch have issues. More parts to hunt down.

At the end of the day... The 330 seems OK! Let it set and idle a couple of times for over a half hour each. Both times the temp. came up to 175 deg. and stayed there. After it warmed up - no smoke! Still need to hook up the oil pressure gauge to see how that looks. No unusal noises though.

Warm, the motor cranked right up even with the pedal disconnected. (Did hook the pedal up later) Zero brakes, but I did nugde it in gear a few times. The trans. seems OK as well! A little noise going in reverse at first. But that cleared up. Got my fingers crossed.

Didn't make it in time for the start of class. But I'm getting closer. Brakes are next. Then the lights and any electrical. May have to get the canopy out if it rains next weekend.
