93 Olds Cutlass Supreme 3.1 Engine tapping / advise?
I drove it with low oil for a short time. Now I have a loud tapping like a really loud sewing machine.
Other than major repair work, are there any fast remedies? Marvels Mystery Oil maybe? Thanks, Hosgeman |

How low is "low"?
How long is "a short time"? Did the oil light come on? I get noise from the lifters if I run the Starfire low on oil. Run to the local parts store and get a bottle of Rislone. Give that a try. It replaces a quart of oil, so you may have to drain some if the oil is full. But if that doesn't do it... Paul |

Is the noise coming from the top, or the bottom, of the engine?

A tapping like a sewing machine would be top end, a louder but more muffled, heavier sound would be bottom end. You can always try Mystery Oil or some similar product but it may not help. You have probably excessively worn valve train components so nothing except replacement will correct the problem.
