50-56 olds susp interchnage

Front suspension from 50-56 olds 88's

Are they similar? Interchange? Same mounting pints?

Working on a custom front suspension and wondering when the suspensions changed through the years. mainly interested in major design changes, vs spring rate & minor changes.

If king pin was changed to BJ, but control arms mount in the same location, same length sans KP/BY diff, that is the typ of info what I want to know.

Some suspension parts will interchange between 49-50 and a 56 according to the USA Parts Supply catalog, some similarities such as still using the king pin styled front end that didn't change till 57 but in all it's doubtful if a direct swap would be possible. The 56 has tube type shocks and the 50 has knee action. The coil springs are different, idler arms are different. There were quite a few improvements changes in that 5 years.

Not knowing your goals have you thought of putting a clip off a 70's A bodied GM car? That seems to be what most do unless they go with a Fatman or Mustang 2 setup.... Tedd

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Disk brakes? Ball joints instead of king pins? Its alot of reading but here are a couple of links that might help you.

The grand scheme is a modern grand touring car. Keeping driveline but changing brakes and suspension to be more up to date. Pack the family and head out. Like to see what will bolt on and provide good improvement gains. Modification is OK. If it comes to doing a subframe clip (2nd gen F body), I'd rather change out the whole frame to aftermarket or 90's Caprice style.

Rod & custom had a feature installing Chevelle arms & spindles on a 50 olds thus the bolt on inquiry.
