Indeed. I love cars with original equipment. Seems like most everything has something on it aftermarket.

 

He actually has a pretty good explanation in the comments. He said it had hubcaps on it when they got it but the GM of Canada paperwork says it has SSI's. Their theory was that the dealer swapped the original wheels onto another car when this car was on the lot

As you, being a 68 man, know, the SS wheel in 68 was interesting. If I remember everything right, the SSI was supposed to be done, the SSII was late, so the 67 SSI was continued briefly. Then the SSII came online and the SSI was stopped. It came back in 69 in a number of ways through 71.

I like the all chrome disc brake versions of the SSI, and the 68 SSII as my favorite wheels.

 

I like the SSI wheel (LE) better than the SSII (LR). When the SSII was late in the '68 production year (not readily available until late March 1968), it was my understanding that the SSI was brought back and offered to those who might have wanted the SSII as long as the car did not have disc brakes. Then, when the SSII became available, the SSI was still offered to those who wanted it as popularity remained strong for the SSI. Because of that they became two separate options in the '69 production year (PO5 for SSI, N66 for SSII) but it appears that the rim of the SSI wheel was changed sometime in March 1969 so that it would accommodate disc brakes (wheel code LY). I say March 1969 because I've never seen or heard of an LY SSI with a date code earlier than late March 1969. I suspect production of the LY wheel was fairly short-lived - enough to finish the season and enough to serve as replacements for damaged wheels, and that explains their rarity today. The wheels for the 1970 production year went to 14X7.

Even back in 1987 when I bought a '69 4-4-2 with SSI wheels, that car didn't have a spare so I went to the junkyard and found an SSI that I was going to use for the spare. When I got it home, however, I could see that the SSI wheel I got at the junkyard was not the same as the SSI wheels on my car - the rim was different. That's also when I discovered that the wheel I got at the junkyard would not fit on a car with disc brakes. So I went back to the yards to find a correct SSI wheel (LY) and ended up searching for 2 years before I found it - on a Buick Skylark, of all cars! Those were the days...$10 for the wheel...plus another dollar to remove the old rag of a tire that was on it.

'68 4-4-2 convertible (came with wire wheel covers and white stripe tires but I changed it out to SSI (drum brakes on this car and the SSI I originally got for the '69 is now on the '68) with red stripe tires)

 

This car went for 23k. A very good price IMO. I was in Chicago at a junk yard. I was looking for exhaust manifolds for my 68. Thought what I found would work (didn't as they were Toro). Boiught them to the counter trailer and asked how much they were. Answer? How much you got on you? I said we're not doing that. I think I paid $50 bucks for the pair. I hate that.

Anyway, auction is over and the car sold for 23k. I would pay that for this example.
