I got a question. Why is the Supreme Pace Car a 350? The 455 was offered in the Supreme, could you get it as an option or did the Y74 -have to have- a 350 if it were a Cutlass?

Mike, I was watching a little
of the Mecom auction yesterday
and one came across the block.
I was suprised they didn't cut to
a commercial. The boys who host
the show on Velocity said they could
be ordered in small or big block form.

Wow, that seems like a deal to me. I love these cars - and i think way under valued.

They can be ordered big block or small block? How about as a Cutlass model with a 350 or a 442 with a 455. In 70 you could order a Cutlass with a 455, wonder if any Cutlass Pace cars came with a 455. From what I have seen they only were an option as a 350 Cutlass or the 442 with 455.

Did these come with trumpet tips, but no cutout bumper?

What a beautiful car! I've always had a soft spot for Indy Pace Cars and the 1970 was my favorite! As an added bonus, the 1970 Cutlass/442 is my favorite year, too! When I graduated from college in 1990, I tried to buy a 1970 Cutlass Indy Pace Car for $14K out of the Southwest (AZ I think), but my dad wouldn't cosign the loan (I now understand why), so I wound up buying a 1968 Road Runner locally (Ohio) for $4,400. I'd give up every old car in my garages to have that one car in their place! DROOL!!!

Does anyone know the whereabouts of this car? The ad expired and I'd love to talk to the seller, or buyer if it sold.

Thanks for responding! I didn't realize that was your car. I guess I thought you were just posting about one you found on the internet for sale. I'm probably going to sell my '71 Cutlass convertible this week locally to get our house ready to sell and get into our "dream home". Like I said in an earlier post, I've wanted a '70 pace car since I graduated from college in 1990 and I'm hoping that after we get into our house, I can replace the '71 with pace car I've always wanted. I've been drooling over your car since you first posted it in June. Beautiful car! If you ever think of selling again, please shoot me a pm. It would go to a good...and permanent home. BTW, is it an original Y74 car? There was a nice one at our local Oldsmobile show this year, an original owner, bench seat/column shift car. Also, there's a 1970 442 pace car that used to show up at the DQ in Lordstown, OH cruise nights. Not sure who he is, but it's a beautiful car. Here's the bench seat Y74 Cutlass:

70 Pace Cars

re: Did these come with trumpet tips, but no cutout bumper?

FYI...

The 1970 Pace Cars were available in Cutlass Supreme and 442 versions.

The Cutlass version was basically a stock Cutlass Supreme and the 442 was also a stock 442. There were no engine options available on either version - the Cutlass' were all 350s and the 442s were all stock 455s. There were no engine modifications on either version except for the W25 OAI which was a mandatory option on all Cutlass and 442 Pace Cars. Also, you could not get the SX, W30,31,32 with them.

The Y74 Pace Car package was exactly the same on both the Cutlass and the 442: all convertibles, all white w/white tops and black interiors, W25, SSII, Sport mirrors and the decals (hood, decklid and body side). The "Official Pace Car" door decals were optional and may have been installed by the dealer if the owner so chose. The original owner of mine chose not to have the door decals added.

Also, the cut-out rear bumper was not part of the package on the Cutlass Supremes and was not available as an option any more than it would have been on a non-pace Car Cutlass Supreme.

Beyond this, the Pace Cars could have been ordered with most anything else available on a Cutlass Supreme or 442: auto, 4-spd, bench, buckets, console, dual gate, power whatever, FE2, etc, etc.

...and don't forget about the 16 Vista Cruisers with the Pace Car package that year.
