Rallye 350 (with 455) Nice Arkansas Seller - Not Mine

http://littlerock.craigslist.org/cto/4322408971.html

Just got off the phone with the seller. He says that he hasn't seen any sign of rust on the car. He just had a machine shop local to him rebuild the 455 at 30 over and he re-fit the other parts to the short-block. Maybe it should be restored back to a 350 engine and OAI equipment. He does not have the breather that mates to the OAI hood. Steve the seller says it runs real good. It's just so hard to find a rust-free car to restore that I thought I'd post it here. I've got plenty to restore at home.

meh....looks like a nice R350 was made into a track car and someone lost interest. IMO at that price you should also get the old 350/350, gears, and stock wheels that came with it, plus all the discarded AC parts.

Maybe they would've been more popular back in the day had there been a Rallye 455

LOL Scot! You know darn well the r-350 was the answer Olds used to get by the Insurance companies who were looking to ding everyone with the 455..

And we all know that any kind of 'Rallye 455' in 1970 was the powerhouse 442 and 442 W30!!!

Yeah I know, BUT the ones that had the dough to buy the 442 and the W30 wasn't worried about insurance premiums

OK. Gotta jump in here and find out for sure. I know supreme was .29 Cents a gallon in 1970. But what was the insurance premium difference between a big cube car and a pedestrian commuter?

I bought a 440 u code Dodge Charger in 1973. My insurance went from $350/yr to $1100.00

In addition to the engine size, the model purchased also affected the insurance premium. This is why those in the know purchased an '70 SX convertible with the W-32 & FE-2 options instead of a 442 convertible, so as to avoid the higher cost premium and surcharge.

Some monthly insurance payments were higher than the car payments.

I found an insurance card in my 442 with the vin number strangely changed and the model listed as a cutlass. Hmmmmmmm. The build sheet doesn't lie though!

I like them too. I do not remember the prices of fuel that early because I started driving in the late '70s. I remember my dad talking about gas prices, "those g#$ D%$&m gas prices...." A neighbor purchased a Rallye 350 and I became hooked on Oldsmobiles after that. Although I have bought several cars over the years, I really have enjoyed the Oldsmobiles the most. Was the Rallye 350 a result of the oil embargo?

The oil embargo didn't come until 73 and then gas prices shot up over 50 cents a gallon. Imagine 50 cent a gallon gas today.

If you add up all the taxes today it would probably be over 50 cent a gallon.

Glenn, you're teasing us....

I remember that oil embargo. My Dad bought a new Chevelle wagon that year (with the A.I.R. emission crap) and it never had the performance or power of the 72 Cutlasses we had at the time. It did have that 'new car smell' though. Dad always knew when I'd 'borrowed' the Chevelle because of the new paint smell burning off the engine.. but he never got upset with me.

It was scary when gas here jumped from .28/gal to around .45/gal. Before the jump, I could fill up the 67 or the 72's from dang near empty for around 5.00. The Chevelle was more thirsty and needed feeding every 4 days or so. Nowadays I can only fill up my small gas can for the lawnmower for 5.00

Last week I was in Houston and the price there ranged between 3.35 down to 3.13/gal. I checked gasbuddy the other day and it's now down to 3.05/gal. Hurray for them but I wish there was some respite for us up here.

Local prices for gas in Edmonton are around 4.16/gal for reg. The prices here fluctuate wildy. One day it can be 3.78/gal, the next day it can jump as much as 35¢/gal higher. It always takes FOREVER to adjust downwards, but seconds to spike. Taxes are a big part of the price, but not to the extent of the overall costs I see when making comparisons.

.50 cents a gallon! I remember paying $1.15. Here in Idaho we pay $3.13/gallon. I guess higher fuel prices are just the way things are nowadays. I always have to figure out how far the car shows are before I go to them. The farthest one I could drive to is 170 miles round trip. Every weekend something is going on with the car group I belong to so it adds up eventually. Darn gas prices! ( I sound like my Dad!)
