I purchased this Cutlass in 2010, and have just finished a year and one-half 'frame-on' restoration. While the car ran and drove when I bought it, it was clear that to be reliable, it needed to have the mechanicals gone through. As everyone who has started a resto with modest intentions knows, you somehow just go deeper and deeper. I did stop short of taking the body off the frame, but other than that pretty much everything has been apart!
The following lists the work performed during the ‘frame-on’ restoration. The most dramatic change is in the paint color. Originally Nutmeg Metallic - I opted for Sunfire Yellow, in PPG Concept single-stage urethane.
Driveline/mechanicals: Replace water pump, fuel pump, oil pump, timing chain, rear main seal, valve cover and pan gaskets. Replaced original Rochester with correct rebuilt unit. All belts and hoses. New horn relay, blower motor relay, windshield wiper motor, alternator, harmonic balancer. Transmission rebuilt with shift kit and torque converter. New dual exhaust with crossover. Rebuilt radiator. New master brake cylinder. All brake drums turned, new innards. New plugs, cap, pertronix ignition and wires. New front wheel bearings, rear end drained/filled. New front suspension kit, including upper and lower ball joints, and steering linkage. New shocks F/R. New rear coil springs. New BF Goodrich radial T/A tires. Original fuel tank with new sender.
Body: Rust repairs to both rear wheel wells, new outer wheel house on RS. Body stripped and put into DP-90, prior to body work. Car disassembled to rolling chassis for paint. PPG Concept single-stage urethane. All new weatherstripping. New body seals and door sweeps in/out. Entire cabin and trunk floors have RAAM sound deadener mat installed. Undercoating inside doors, quarters and front fenders. Windshield replaced. Added sport mirrors, super sport color-coded wheels, upgraded hood. Halogen headlights. NOS grilles. Added stripe package. New bumpers front and rear. Spare is not BFG. Jack assembly is not original.
Interior: Dash removed and dash wiring harness replaced. Added tic-toc-tac. New instrument lenses. Rebuilt AM/FM with rear fade control. New speakers. Console refinished. New carpeting. Sport steering wheel. Remote LS mirror. New window crank handles, new interior RV mirror. New door sills. New carpeting. Seat upholstery as original with new trim and improved padding in fronts. Door panels as original, armrest backing plates, bases and pads are new. Seat belts are original. Air conditioner recharged with R-12. New owners manual. Trunk done in carpeting.
Convertible Top: Frame stripped and painted. New electrical switch, pump motor, 2 lift cylinders and hoses. New top well, tack strips. Robbins glass window and top cover. New weatherstripping. New convertible top boot.
This car was built to be a driver. Drive it, enjoy it, enter it in your local car show. It gets plenty of thumbs-up and is easy to drive. Plus, for us baby boomers, you don't have to be a contortionist to get in!
