There should never be a reason to get the main bearing caps out of order since the number/order is cast into the cap iteself. Numbers are facing towards the front but also the recess for the bearing tangs on the caps go together with the similar tangs cast into the block.

Similarly, connecting rod caps can always be properly assembled onto the rod because the recess for the bearing tangs on the caps go together with those cast into the rods. Rods can always be properly oriented in the cylinder be making sure that the little oil spithole that is cast into the rod where it mates with the rod cap points inside, or towards, the crankshaft.

There is only a need to number the rod/piston assembly if the pistons will not be replaced and the intent is to reassemble the motor with the same rods and pistons.
