Engine Oil Pan Drain Removal Tool for 394ci?

OK, 394ci newbie here. I went to drain the oil on my 1964 Dynamic 88 today (low compression 2bbl 394ci V8) and the drain plug appears to be an internal octagon with points, kinda like a female Torx socket but with 8 points instead of 6. I have never seen a drain plug like this. Is there a special tool for this? Do all the 394ci use this? Of course, my 1964 Oldsmobile service manual does not say anything about a special socket. Any help is appreciated!

Sounds like a socket for Square shaped nuts would work. Most standard nuts are 6 point, but they make 12 point sockets. I assume the same idea applies here to the old school square ones.

There is of course a special removal tool that fits into this particular drain plug. They come up on Ebay once in a great while.

I don't have one- I just use a half inch square drive ratchet- it fits perfectly & works fine.

Whew! Thanks Chuck. I freaked when I saw the drain plug, and did not have a 1/2" drive with me (I'm storing the car in a friend's garage). I'll take my 1/2" ratchet and an extension with me the next time I go work on it and get the oil changed. I'm determined to have the car safely on the road by May: it's not been registered since around 1990!

Use the ratchet WITHOUT the extension. Extensions tend to slip in the recess and round off the points, creating a whole 'nother problem which believe me you do not want to deal with.

I have one of the tools, but the ratchet works just as good and don't have to dig out (read hunt for) another tool.

Olds used that style drain plug thru 1967. My buddy freaked the first time he tried to change oil in his 66 Starfire. He's a Pontiac guy and had never seen anything like it. Told him welcome to Oldsworld...

I always use a large cresent wrench when I change the oil in my 64 98. Actually, I think the plug on my car is so worn a metric socket fits over it nicely. I want to say it is a 32 or 34mm socket. I can't remember exactly. I know it is one of the biggest metric sockets I have.

Well this is your once every 3 years you'll find it on Ebay.. Check out auction 270222401606..$25 + $10 shipping = ripoff when you can do the same exact thing with a ratchet.. Its funny cause every '59 and '60 394 block I have takes a conventional 5/8 ( i think ) nut. I wonder what mental midget made the change to the later 394 oil plugs

In the glove box of my '62, I keep one of the original Kent-Moore wrenches - not one of those sockets. I stumbled across it at a swap meet a few years ago for $2.

I was going to add that I often see these tools at Carlisle. There are several vendors who regularly have boxes full of old KD tools and usually several of these drain plug tools are in there if you look. $2 seems to be the going rate.

I have the same tool as 'Oldsfan' and it works just great (actually, I have two of them). They're hard to come by, so grab one when you can.
