should i buy this 455 f block? i need input plz

this guy on craigslist is selling a 1971 f block 455

i have bought some stuff from him before he does complete restorations for people and buys parts cars to fix up his customers cars and parts out what he doesnt use

well now he has this 455 he says it runs great and i was wondering what you guys were thinking

his asking price is high but he does move on his price somewhat from when i bought stuff from him in the past what do you think is fair to offer him for it

I ask about approximate miles, those older Olds could go WELL over 100k, mine has 164k with just the top end redone. Although Oldsguy has a "cheaper" engine, I kinda think $1200 or $1250 is a little high, you also are having to consider picking it up or getting it shipped.

I'd only speculate with what was described, you might offer $800, but if you're going to dicker start lower. Again thats my opinion.

yeah he's the type where you say one price and he says im being fair for selling it at this, then he says well how about 1k and it goess on from there

I think anything over $800 for an Olds engine that hasn't been rebuilt is high. Especially since it doesn't have C heads, W & Z manifolds or something like that.

Personally I would say he's way to high, I bought a 1970 455 toronado engine still in the car running for $500.00 another 1970 455 out of a Olds 98 that had been disasembled for $100.00 both E heads. and another 455 toro motor with J heads for FREE. G heads are good heads when you do a little port work, much better than the later J heads!

I'm about 365 miles north of San Fransisco, but if you can't find something closer I've got several 455's and some 425's that I would sell. If you would have a way to come and get one I could offer several different heads and choices of a couple different intakes. If you wanted to rebuild one I could provide a complete 455 2 bbl engine with G heads for $250 . I've got some runners too but most are out of the car and in the garage. I got mine running, w/74000 miles for $450
The guy even reset the dwell and let me drive the car for an hour before we pulled the motor.
G headed 72
AND the th400 trans came with it.

he's asking 1350 for just the 455 it has no rebuild it still runs he says 99k miles on it, it has g heads, its a 72 block and the least he said he would go on it is 900 and i said no thanks and left i pretty much wasted my time on this guy but oh well maybe in a month like olds64 said he'll change his tune

2blu442 i wish you lived 200 miles closer the only vehicle i have that can carry an engine is my e 250 van and that thing only gets about 10 miles to the gallon so i would be looking at about 300 dollars in gas and a days drive and that pretty much turn me away right there

I gave 400 for a 68 455 with G heads, and a Torker on it. I had to put a pan on it, and a distributor. It is still running.

i guess what everybody says is true, things in the bay area just cost more,and its unfortunate for me because i work part time, go to school full time, and i only make 11 dollars an hour

Well, if you can be patient and just keep looking you should be able to find something more reasonable. I agree that you shouldn't have to pay near that for what he has. I watch the classifieds, especially the little nickel (local ad paper) and Craigslist. The good thing about Craigslist.com is the ads are free to post, so you may get someone just wanting to clean out the garage. I've bought the remains of three boat motors on Craigslist which provided good heads, two had standard transmisison flywheels, and one had low miles with 7 of the 8 pistons almost new. So save your spare change, keep your eyes open, and when something good comes by you can snag it. John

I agree. Keep your eyes open. You can probably buy a complete running car for less than he wants for the motor.

Dave is correct. You can pick up a decent project car for less than $1300. True, it might be rough, but you get a car, engine and transmission. In fact, I know where there is a 72 98 4 door hardtop for sale that has a 455 with G heads. The guy only wants $800. It doesn't run, but it turns over. The good deals are out there you just have to be patient.

I paid $700.00 for a 20k rebuilt 425 motor that was converted to 455, with an edelbrock performance 455 intake and Carter AFB carb on it, came with spare parts, spare distributors, and THREE transmissions, including the one i intend to use with it.

you can always find a better deal.
