If I remember correctly the measurement should be 4.5 inches from the flange above the barbs to the add line.

With stock pan and filter it's 5 qts. The easy solution here is drain the oil, change the filter, fill with five quarts, run the engine briefly (to fill the new filter), let cool, then check the level on the new dipstick. Scribe a new mark as necessary.

You can also sand the dipstick and paint it white so the oil contrasts with the dipstick. It makes it easier to see your oil level.

I got a Mr. Gasket chrome dipstick for my 455. It didn't come with a gasket but it fit snug. I had to tap it in with a small hammer.

There is no gasket. The dipstick tube must be pressed into the block. If it is very loose, then I suspect you have not hammered it down into the block. The formed ring on the tube mus sit against the boss on the block.

There is 3 ring/ bumps on the block, the first bottom one easily slides in the block the second seems possibly a hair bigger than the enging block's hole then the top ring which im guessing is the formed ring your talking about.
