Hi
What is the easiest way to remove the old timing gear from the crankshaft and install a new one? Can the gear be changed without removing the crankshaft from the engine? Is it ever possible to reuse the timing gear on the crankshaft or must this gear be changed whenever the timing chain is changed? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

 

Well, the first thing is that the key needs to be removed from the keyway in the crank before the crank gear will come out. That might be enough by itself, but if not, you'll need to use a puller. Temporarily reinstall the balancer bolt to preclude messing up the threads in the nose of the crank when using the puller.

 

Okay, I assume the key continues into the timing gear to prevent the gear from possibly spinning. How is the key removed? Is there a specific type of puller for this job? Thanks!

 

I use a pair of pliers on the key. Wiggle it forward and up, and don't bend it.
The gear should come right off of the snout with the key removed.
