Thumbs up "nutter new member with a 442!

New guy from Texas who recently acquired a '69 442. Looking for help on getting it back to reliable daily driver condition, so this forum will be a great resource.

Welcome

Welcome aboard

69's are my favorite.

When my friend on the west coast [where it rains everyday] see's another 69 come on board he goes crazy. We're taking over the board, then the world.

Thumbs up '69's rule

Thanks for the welcome. This is actually my 3rd 69 Cutlass, as I owned two Cutlass S back in the 70's. This is my first 442, although it is almost a dead ringer for one of the others in appearance. Have had the new one about a month now, and getting familiar with all the little irritating defects that a 40-year old vehicle has. I think this one must have sat idle in a garage for a long time as it shows only 67000 miles and appears to be original in many respects. Has a number of modifications, but I am not a purist. Looks and drives exceptionally well for its age, and especially for the bargain price I paid for it.

I am a big fan of the 69's as you obviously are. Wish I had the garage space to acquire a few more, but the wife might balk. She tolerates me having my '38 Buick in the garage...I can't push my luck and ask her to move her car outside to make room for any more toys!

OK, will post some as soon as I figure out how to do it. Oldsmobiles are easier to fool around with than computers are.

Theres a Palimino gold 63 and an Aztec Gold 75. I'm not sure which one it is but it sure is purdy.

The black Y42 hood stripe really looks nice with the black top and the gold.

Thumbs up Aztec Gold

The paint job is not original, but repainted in original Aztec Gold, per the specs on the manufacturer's plate. Vinyl top is probably original...faded but presentable. Not a show car but a darn good driver that gets lots of attention.

It's a TH400 auto with console shift, 400 engine, bucket seats, Tom. Engine has been tinkered with over the years. Someone stuck a Holley 650 carb on it, and also after-market performance exhaust headers. A modern day Kenwood radio despoils the dash, and it's got 15-inch wheels with 255 radials. Actually, I like all the non-original mods, so I'm not complaining.

NONE of the instruments work except the speedometer and odometer. My first project is to get a gas gauge. I have ordered a new fuel tank sending unit and under-dash gauge. Apparently I get only 10 mpg as I had to almost coast into a station the first week I had it!

Thanks for the welcome. You will probably agree with me the '68 and '69 body styles are the best Dr. Olds made.

Wise Weasel

There's no "probably" about it my Texas friend...the 69 442 is the definitive statement in automotive design, past, present and future!!! Sometimes at the end of a long day at the office,I'll go out to the garage late at night, flip on the lights, and just stand and stare at my red on red 69 442 post coupe...the wife will look in on me ,and ask "what in the world are you doing out here??" She just sighs when I say.."Hon',it's a guy thing" Enjoy your ride...it's not the "meek", but the 69's that shall inherit the earth!!

Correction on paint code

Nobody probably cares, but I gave the wrong info on the paint on my 442 in an earlier post. The guy I bought it from told me it was Aztec Gold, but the body data plate says it is paint code 65 which is something called Topaz Poly. The paint chart at TCP matches what is on the car, so I guess my car is Topaz Poly.

Don't count on it

I need to agree with the past posts. A 1969 442 is the be all end all and the only car I would have bought when persuing my midlife crisis treatment.

69 442

I agree with the 69 442 being tops, but then, I'm an owner as well (name came from my previous car, a 69 vert!).

My second car (and first project) way back around 1979 or 80 was a 69 442 convertible. Told myself from that time forward I'd get a 69 H/O, and that's what I got last year. Can't beat the looks in my book.
