Given that the 72 442's came standard with a 350, does a non-original 455 increase or decrease the value? I guess it's originality vs. HP. Also, does it make a difference if the non-original 455 is period correct? I always thought a non-original motor would decrease the value somewhat but does that hold true if the replacement motor is an upgrade? Anybody had any experience with swapping a BB into a SB 72 442?

 

Definitely decrease.
455s are good bang for your buck motors, but only if you can find a cheap one that still runs decent after 37 years.

 

I know it sucks, but the non original 455 will decrease the value of your 442 even though its an upgrade. I would store the original drivetrain after your swap just in case you should ever decide to part with your baby. I'm putting a 68 Toro 455 in my 72 Cutlass now. Numbers weren't really a concern for me since my car was a bastard when I got it...LOL. Search the BB forum for "swap", you should find some tips there....

 

Scott, I agree with Chris. If the engine in your car is the 'born-with' engine, simply take the engine out and properly store it. Then, drop in the 455 you want and drive the heck out of it. Then, over time, you can take your time going over the original engine, freshen it up or rebuild it. This, to me, would then actually enhance the value of the car, as when you went to sold it, the person would be getting 2 working engines--the original, and the 455.

 

If you "restore" the car you definitely want the original engine in it. If you find a good deal on a 455 and want to build it for a fun street/strip machine then go ahead and do it but keep the 350 in your garage like Chris said.
