1966 Toronado Fuel Tank Vent Configuration

Hello all. New to this forum and had a question.

A few months back, I picked up a fixer upper in Oklahoma City to drive it to Denver (where I live) to put in storage in anticipation of a full restoration.

One of the first things my buddy & I noticed was fuel leaking from the gas tank when we filled it up. Eventually, the leaking went away when the fuel level dropped.

Since getting home, I have done some research on the source of the leak. From looking at the OLDS manual, it shows that a vent hose (or pipe?) loop is supposed to extend through the floor pan in the trunk just behind the passenger side rear wheel well.

After inspecting that area on my vehicle, there is no vent hose in the trunk area, and I couldn't locate a hole or grommet in the tunk floor for this vent loop. I am guessing the fuel is leaking from the vent nipple on top of the tank because no vent hose is connected.

Is anyone familiar with the configuration for the fuel tank vent system? A picture would be great if available.

thanks!
alex

1966 Toro gas tank vent

Hello Alex, welcome to the site!

I believe the vent hose should stick up next to the gas cap with a small nipple in it. I've got a couple 1966 parts cars so I'll try to come up with a photo. John

Gas tank vent

Hello Alex
Here's where the breather comes out near the fill cap. I wonder if you were looking at the vacuum hose for the remote trunk release in your manual. Do you have a Chassis Service Manual? If you don't, I would encourage you to pick one up as they are a weath of information. John

Hey John. Thanks much for taking the time to take and post pictures of the vent.

Yes, I do have a 66 Olds Chassis Manual. The fuel tank vent routing is illustrated in the "FUEL" chapter of the Toronado section at the end of the manual.

Interesting that the actual routing/configuration is quite a bit different than what is shown in the manual. Either that, or the drawing in the manual is representative only.

Do you have any parts available on those parts cars? Im looking for a bunch of stuff.

thanks again!

Toro Parts

Hello Alex
Yes I have parts available for these cars. I'll send you a PM with my email address. Also, I know there's a couple other guys on this site who have early Toro parts for sale, so hopefully we can come up with what you need.

One last thing, I recently removed the rear panel that houses the tail lights on one of the cars and discovered there's two vent hoses that run from the gas tank, not just one.
