We got the ball rolling

I got my sons working on the 442. I'm gonna miss those boys when there gone. They cleaned the underside of the car and used encapsulator paint on the frame and body. We put a 1/4 on the car that fit very nicely. We hope to drop the body back on tomorrow.

the shell with my worker underneath

My Dad made me work on 50 Oldsmobiles back when I was a kid and he never gave me a penny, then he would sell the cars and keep it all. I give the kids between $7-$10 an hour depending on the job. The underside of the car work was $10 an hour work. You can see my 16 year old under the car.

Olds64, I know you old man is going to read this since he keeps this board running. Look what a favor he did you (maybe). He got you into this hobby. Otherwise you might be doing something a lot less frustrating today.

Dan was teaching you responsibilty and how to work on your own cars to keep them running. That is an important skill required for restoring your yacht

Lol. I gave up on the youth of today around me.
A group of local 15-20 year old kids in the neighborhood were staring at me sandblasting my body shell and were in awe at the mess I had made of body parts and car pieces strewn about.

They asked me what kind of car it was and thought it looked cool.
They seemed interested in the project so I told them to come by the following weekend and give me a hand if they liked, painting the frame, and bumper inserts, inner fenders etc etc. for 10 bucks an hour. 3 of them said they'd be there AND bring a couple friends. So.....I figured I had to have enough parts blasted to keep 5 or 6 kids busy painting for 4 hours.

Well..... not 1 of the little bastages showed up, and I had to work myself a 16 hour shift to get everything coated before it flash rusted.

The reason I started to pay

Sandblasting sucks,
My kids and I restored a 65 Biscayne and it was to be a family project. But after my boys got done sandblasting the frame in 90 degree heat, I could see moral was very low. So to get the project going again I knew I had to do something to motivate the troops.... So I decided to pay them.

That biscayenne is very sharp. In fact, that's the color I'm looking to paint my olds. Do you have any paint codes?

I had a relative order the paint and I can't read the can. But I know it is a Ford truck color from the 70's. See if that helps. If not I'll get it the next time I see him and PM you.

Still making progress

We got the body back on the frame. All the welding is done, I think we'll be priming the car soon.

passing the torch onto the younger generation......(sigh)

I don't think I'll have to sweat my son being interested in restoring cars (he's 8 now). I bought him a Hewlett-Packard laptop computer about 6 months ago...and he's been attached at the wrist every since, If it was waterproof.....he'd take it in the tub with him. Next I think I'll buy him a pocket protector and some BIC ballpoint pens (ever see Big Bang theory?) he's such a geek! The worlds full of different people, acceptance is just part of getting older and wiser. He does like attending the Monster Jam monster truck show every year when it comes around here. So there is s slight chance of hope, but I won't hold my breath, I might passout 1st.

My youngest son was headed for geekdom until he worked as a electricans helper as a junior in high school after one summer working in on construction projects he signed up for apprenticeship school and now he is a superentendent for the same company I work for. You never know where they are going until they get there. Still likes computers but they are secondary to other things now

More progress

My son just shot a half gallon of polyester primer on the W30. I guess it's like a liquid bondo. The car is getting pretty straight. After the car is blocked out with some 180 we'll do some spot repair and re-shoot the areas that needed work.
It's gonna be a nice car when the overspray clears.

My Uncle is a local streetrod/car painter. He was nice enough to show me the ropes 20 years ago. I never was trained by a tech school, which means I'm still learning.
The thing about body work is that a guy can lose direction, get overwelmed.
The way he taught me was to strip the car to bare steel, do all welding repair, get the filler work very close, epoxy prime the car, and then prime the car with a couple heavy coats of gray primer. Then a light coat of red primer. Take a long block with 180, block sand in all directions. Block off the red and you end up with a gray car with red spots. Repair spots/dents with poly putty or a super fine filler.
repeat primer process
X3
X4 if needed. The better you get the less repeats you need to do.
Once you realize what your looking for you don't need to change colors anymore.
Here I am standing next to a truck my Uncle did a couple years ago.

Great tip using the red primer as a guide coat. Your car is looking good, looking forward to seeing the finihed product.

We were going to paint the hood and trunk off the car but decided to do the old school way.
It looks good so far.

Typically we would have the fenders, hood and trunk off the car but the striping will take some time and I hate to get bogged down trying to re-align the fenders to lay out all the stripes. This will be the first metalic paint job for my son and it should go fine. We have a good working gun and the most critical part is to step back a little on the last coat and fan on the metalic on an even manner. I'll take some pics later today.
