4-4-2 or 4-42?
Ive heard people say it both ways. Im pretty sure your suppose to say 4-4-2 but 4-42 does sound pretty cool. I usually say 4-4-2 if i know im talking to a hardcore olds guy but with anyone else 4-42 probably comes out.

Definitely "four four two." Originally came from 4 barrel carb, 4 speed transmission, and dual (2) exhaust. Not "four fourty two." But really its whatever makes ya happy.
It's kinda like calling a firearm magazine a "clip" - the latter makes purists cringe as it's not technically correct, but most people do it. I suppose one could call a Cutlass a "Cutl-ASS" too. ![]()

We always said it meant gas tires and oil- as in it used a lot of all three!
Yup- FOUR FOUR TWO. I've been known to correct people publicly when they say four forty two. And don't even come at me with that four hundred forty two cubic inch engine mess. I'll publicly embarrass you.

The GTO wasn't a "competitor" it was the first of it's kind, all the rest were after it. In these parts 4-4-2 meant car that rich daddy took you to the dealer to buy in his (fleet)wood, 9-8 or 225 , I mean deuce and a quarter.
I was in my GTO/goat? and was told to "Go to Olds" so I got the Vista, who says you can't have both? If I ever go to furd I told my wife to shoot me... really. Allan |

A little friendly competition between GM brands is allowed, even here. Although I would think that Ford people would point to the Mustang in late '64 as the introduction to the pony car market segment. Muscle car? what does that mean, to six people it will mean six different things. 442, GTO, Charger, GTX, on and on and on. My friend says a true muscle car has three pedals. So, is the GTO a muscle car or a pony car? Is the 442 a muscle car or a pony car? What about the first overhead valve V8s introduced in 1949 by Oldsmobile, where they the first muscle cars? Then, what about the Ford flathead rule of supremacy in the 30s, and 40s, and some would say even into the 50s? To each our own. Heck, I can even allow the kids today with their "tuners" what else are they going to hot-rod and race? Give' em mom's old Civic and let 'em go!

I think there have been a few muscle cars in recent years. The Buick GN was definitely a muscle car. The early to mid 90s Chevy Impala was a muscle car. The recent Dodge Chargers are muscle cars (if they have the SRT-8 engine). Finally, the new Dodge Challenger is also a muscle car. IMHO...

There were some pictures of a Motion 442 in some magazine a while back but I cannot remember which one.
I think the Cutlass police option stuff was there and available before the GTO hit the streets, but it conveniently answered Pontiac's challenge without a whole lot of fuss. I think a quick emblem tooling job was about all they had to make. That and contract with U.S. Royal for some of their new high performance (by 1964 standards anyway) redline tires.

Yes. I also recall the magazine article, but not the magazine or date.

Nope. Consider that the first (1964) 442 came with a 330 and a 4 speed.

Sure it didn't mean "I got a 44 under the seat, two of them!"

For 1964 it was 4 speed, 4bbl, dual exh For 1965 it was 400 engine, 4bbl, dual exh For 1966 it was meaningless, since you could get a 3x2 bbl that year, or a 2bbl starting in 1968, or a 455 starting in 1970, or a 350 2bbl starting in 1972...

What did 442 mean in 1991? I bet that was the best 442 of all!

Interpolating from the '64 (Four barrels, forty-two on the floor).
Would that make it Four cylinders and forty-two valves? Norm |
