Since the second digit is a one, I would say its a 71.

Also I'm NOT sure that is a OLDS th400 the first digit is a 2 it should be a 3

You got this number from the drivers side just above the pan...right?

Do you have the two letter code and numbers form the RIVOTED tag?

That indicates a 1971 pontiac, installed for their 455.

The other numbers are the serial number for THAT trans.

Sorry, my book does not list model of vehicle. I would guess to say that is a very common calibration (valvebody) used in many models.

My olds has a 78 pontaic 400 trans.....and its been a good one. So no problem there....good luck.

does anybody have a 1972 olds TH400 for sale?
I have a olds TH400 from 1979 but want to have the correct yr for my car.

If all other numbers match on the car except the trans can it still be a numbers matching car?

Nice try. The "X" for the W-30 engine only applies to the engine code used in the full VIN and only for the 1972 model year. As noted, in this VIN derivative the "2" indicates Pontiac division, the "1" indicates 1971 model year, and the "X" indicates the Kansas City, KS factory. Since KC only built full size cars, this trans likely came out of a Bonneville.

The "71" also indicates 1971 model year. The "P" in the "PA" indicates Pontiac (just as the "O" in OW, for example, indicates Oldsmobile). The "A" would likely provide info as to the engine it was bolted to, but I don't have the listings for 1971 Pontiac transmissions.
