I am looking for suggestions on how to restore the plastic inner fenders.

If anyone has some ideas please let me know.

I scrubed them down with dawn detergent and water, then wiped them with brake clean. I then painted them with Krylon fusion paint for plastics. Been 4 yrs and they still look good. When they get dusty I just wipe them down. Jkaz

 

are they supposed to be glossy or dull ? I've got a car with one of each.

 

SEM satin black with proper preperation looks great and is very durable.

 

I agree, Sem Satin black is an excellent product for the inner fenders.

 

in the ATV (4 wheeler) world we wet sand our finders. start with about 400 on the deep scratches and go to a 600 and eventually 1000. i would think it would also work on these inner finders. it takes about 20 hours for a set of back atv finders but they look new when they are done.

I'm about to start refinishing the plastic inner fenders on my car. I've tried to find the Sem black satin paint, but have not been successful.
In a Sem catalog, I found black "landau", and have seen a can of it, but it looks a bit too glossy. Is there a model # for the Sem black satin paint? Also, where is the paint available?

VHT Vinyl Dye is easy to find and works great.

I covered mine with Aircraft Stipper first, then a powerwash and wax/grease remover.

3 light coats of the VHT Vinyl Dye made them look like new.

Also, get a mounting kit from Fusick, and all the clips and bolts will be new as well.

 

My W30 red inners were old and chalky looking. I used the method described by Jensonracing77 and buffed them like you would a fender and they came back to life. Mine were so deeply discolored white, I scraped them down with a razor blade until I got the color back then sanded and buffed. They aren't perfect but have more of a patina look to them. When people see my inners they know their not repopped. Not show worthy by any stretch of the word, but good driver quality.

 

I found that scotchbrite worked wonders on my plastic inner fenders (at least on the engine compartment side.)
It took off the stains and paint overspray and left them very nice looking.
I used medium and then changed to the finer scratch-resisting type for the finish. Use no more than moderate pressure.

Of course, try on a non-visible area first to see how it works - not all plastics are the same!

 

I would much rather see that on an original W-Car than a set of re-pops anyways...

And thanks for the suggesting of the razor scraping first. Sounds like a good idea to get it back to a "new layer" to start fresh with.

It is SEM Satan Black # 15243. You can usually find it at an auto body supply shop. I have not found it in just an auto parts store unless they have speciality auto body supplies.

 

Purchase it on the net, that is where I found it. As w31 states 15243 is correct for the satin black. You will also need the SEM soap to clean all surfaces and the prep.

Go to SEM.com and there is a place to see the complete process and the materials needed. Look under plastic prep and painting.

The top (engine) sides of my inner fenders are in pretty decent shape. The undersides (wheel side) are a different story. It seems to make sense to try to buff/wet sand first (to retain original material visibility) and then try the paint as plan B.

I've purchased that kit along with the fan shroud, fender and hood hinge fastener kits.

 

Cool! I will have to check it out. It sure beats making numerous trips to the hardware store to replace each nut and bolt individually.

 

hey guys heres a horror story for ya,just bought a 69 convertable,for a parts car for my 69 442,it came with a set of factory red inner fender wells that someone had painted black,paint appears to be stuck pretty good,how to remove???

 

Brake fluid and/ or Easy Off oven cleaner.

 

Easy off doesn't harm or fade the plastic?

Just about to do mine, they are covered in old undercoating and all kinds of crap. Had to pull the passenger side for the heater core, so I might as well pull the other one...
