New guy

Hey Everyone

I'm a tech at Western Corvette in Calgary Canada and we are restoring a 69 442 Convertible and I'm trying to find correct paint colors for detailing the engine.

Hopefully you guys can help me out!

Thanks!

Thanks guys!

Generally I work on Vettes but this 442 is a nice change of pace My problem is I dont know anything about them haha.

The owner wants it to be as correct as possible. So we have ripped the engine out because it was a 3 tone paint job...blue, gold and brown ...and the nice color of oil and grease haha.

It's not going to get a full resto because the car is pretty clean as is. Mostly engine and interior and some exterior trim.

Where other then year1 can I find olds parts?

Also is there a gallery on here, I'd like to look at some original or restored 69 engine bay pictures to make sure I do it right.

Fusick is the name of a good parts supplier.

The 3 tone engine might make me want to check some numbers. It wouldn't be the first blown 400 replaced with a 455.

You can also get reproduction interior parts from either Legendary or SMS Auto Fabrics.

Looks nothing like the one i am working on. That is a funny color , should be more brown-rust color.

number nuts

Thor,

FYI

Many Oldsmobubble fans are crazy about # [and some letters]

The "C" heads are correct and it should have 396026 G cast number

yes it has the 396026G on the block...does that mean it is the correct 400? I know Chevy's lol this olds stuff is all new to me.

How do you tell a 400 from a 455 which casting numbers does a person look for?

Look at me...I'm learning!

Yep, but you can also check the vin on the car to the vin on the engine to make sure it's a "matching # car" Kind of a Holy Grail to some Olds guys.

Carb should be 7029251

Vin should begin 344679

But the body plate [cowl tag] could be the same as a Cutlass [depending on build date]

If you'll post the cowl tag # we have help you determine what color[s] the car was and the origional interior.

There are no 455 in 69 442's only in the Hurst Olds.

Thanks Jamesbo!

Ok the 344679 does match to the vin.

We looked up the paint code and it's supposed to be sable I guess and it has a white interior which supposedly there werent any with sable exterior lol...weird

anyway the block # 39M383177 so I'm guessing it's not a numbers matching block. The last 4 numbers of the vin 7908.

Can anyone tell me what this block might have come out of?

Thanks

Les

Smile Engine paint

The dark bronze colour is correct... just freshen it up with the Hirsch paint... closest other colour is '77 Porche...didn't have Bill Hirsch when I painted the wife's engine a couple of years ago...

Correct, the block is not original. And the block *is* from a '69 442, so it is quite correct.
Not unusual for '68-'69 442s to have grenaded their engines. The long stroke 400s did not take too kindly to thrashing.

I wonder why you're thinking there weren't any with that combo?
That happens to be the original combo of *my* '69! Codes 61B and 937 on the cowl tag?

Also, by chance was it sold new in Canada? If so, you can get what is essentially a copy of the invoice with all the options, etc. that came originally came on the car.

Actually I guess the colour of the interior is antique parchment (or something like that lol)

And the owner is looking at getting the car repainted back to the factory sable colour. So I guess we'll see what happens lol...just waiting on paint for the engine and new fuel and brake lines and some other odds and ends.

Thanks for your help guys!

If you need new upholstery (door panels, seat covers) I would ONLY use Legendary Auto Interiors for the '69 442. The PUI dot patterns on their upholstery is terrible--it's not even close to being deep enough.
